NOT SEEKING RE-ELECTION

Alex Mitchell and Kerry-Anne Walsh report in Sunday’s Sydney Sun-Herald on a chance meeting between seething misfit Mark Latham and a polite fan (no link available):

Two weeks ago Elizabeth, the adult daughter of [new Werriwa MP] Chris Hayes, spied the former MP at the local shopping centre. She approached him, enthusing how she had been wanting to meet him and wish him well. The former Labor leader retorted: “OK, you’ve done it” and terminated any possibility of conversation.

He ain’t bitter. Not at all.

  1. It’s a shame she wasn’t younger, say six or so.  Then he could have just kicked her out of the way.

  2. At least he didn’t punch her or something.

  3. Yup.  In desperate need of anger management.  At least until somebody hauls off and knocks him on his keester, and then I bet he’ll cool off some.

  4. I had just such a bitter encounter with one Bob Rae, former Ontario provincial NDP leader (Ontario is in Canada, the NDP are our socialist political party). Was shooting him for the local lefty weekly (long story - I got better) at the law office where he graciously earns six figures a year for the good of the people. He was bitter, rude and defensive - apparently still smarting from being turned on by organized labour and the left in general after his short tenure as Premier ended when he tried to balance the budget, and asked provincial employees to take an unpaid work day, dubbed “Rae days” by angry union leaders.

It was an unpleasant experience, but I couldn’t help but find it somehow richly ironic.

The left does have a habit of eating their own when push comes to shove.

Same thing here in Berlin where the post-communists (well, they’d probably prefer socialists these days) are sitting in the city-state government and have to deal with the near-bankruptcy that Berlin has slid into during the last 20 years. If it wasn’t such a serious situation, it would be hilarious to watch the handful of sensible guys (who realize that the money just isn’t there) have to ward off those in their own party who’d rather take out the messenger than confront reality.

  6. Well, on second thought the same can be said for Germany on the national level, where the money isn’t there either, but plenty of union guys and social democrat politicians (quite some overlap between those two groups, naturally) prefer to rail against even modest reforms because of the impending “social chill” that will surely send millions into poverty.

  7. You talkin’ to me?
    You talkin’ to me?
    You talkin’ to me?
Then who the hell else are you talkin’ to?
    You talkin’ to me?
Well I’m the only one here.
Who do you think you’re talking to?
    Oh yeah?
    Huh?

    Ok.

    ...with apologies to Bobby

  8. That’s interesting.
I thought he would he would have moved to Rose Bay by now, away from all those tiresome voters.
