NO BLOOD FOR OWL

Britain’s crippling barn owl shortage appears to be over, at least in some areas:

Conservation chiefs are over the moon as barn owl sightings soar in and around Worcester.

The Worcester Barn Owl Conservation Group ... received reports from more than 20 people, with the birds being particularly prevalent in Hanbury, Bradley Green and Crowle.

Depleted stocks elesewhere in the UK have seen crude owl rise to $80 per barrel. Which is where pink plastic flamingos are headed.

  1. "Let’s face it,” he said. “As iconic emblems of kitsch, there are two pillars of cheesy, campiness in the American pantheon. One is the velvet Elvis. The other is the pink flamingo."

Oh yeah? Well Mr. Smartypants, what about “Dogs Playing Poker” pictures?

  4. The Worcester Barn Owl Conservation Group.  I bet they’re just wild on Saturday nights.  Here’s Hathaway * , leader of the group, explaining barn owl surveillance strategies to a salesman from paco’s company.  I believe the latter is about to close the deal on 10,000 pairs of binoculars and water proof butt cushions.

    * not to confused with this Hathaway, who you will never see at a Worcester Barn Owl Conservation Group meeting, to the sad misfortune for the men in the group.

I’m not sure who’s more heartbroken - John Waters, or the entire population of Cheektowaga, New York.

Be prepared for a surge in reports of death in and around Worcester.

As for the late, lamented pink flamingos, I last sighted a flock of about 20 in a yard just a few miles from my house a couple of years ago.  Must have been migrating.  I blame loss of habitat.

There are also wooden cutouts of geese dressed in gingham frocks. At least there’s one. It’s on my front porch.

  13. Cobb County Georgia wetlands are still home to healthy populations of the two concrete frogs on a loveseat with umbrellas.  Newcomers to West Cobb have brought a resurgence in concrete donkeys with cactus pot panniers, while at leat one of the McMansions of East Cobb features a 10 foot bronze running ostrich.  Same taste, bigger wallet.

  14. There is also a species of plastic owl, in competition with other polymer avian species. I noticed them on the tops of homes in Sun City, Arizona. I’m not sure what they’re for, but I imagine they’re for the purpose of scaring away smaller birds.

    Wronwright: truly, LOL!

That’s how we say it these days (at least in Canada).

  20. 18: I just googled Anne Hathaway (you know what I mean), and it says she was in Brokeback Mountain. I never saw it, but isn’t that the movie where the two cowboys . . . but Anne Hathaway was there!  . . . and still the two cowboys . . . even though Anne Hathaway was around . . .?!? Sometimes, as Yul Brynner said in quite another movie, “Life is a very big puzzlement!”

  22. paco,

Yes, it’s puzzling.  If Anne Hathaway was around wear a plunging neckline like her photo, chances are I wouldn’t even know Heath Ledger and the other guy were around.  I certainly wouldn’t care.  I guess I have a form of tunnel vision.

  27. I’m glad the owls have been given a stay of execution. But I’m still worried about the octopus trade on Amal’s beach. All that sex tourism must surely be putting a dent into the previously endless supply of 8-leggers.

  28. There are plastic owls aplenty around the docks.  Sunday sailors seem to think they keep the various sea birds from landing and defecating on their boats.  HAHAHAHA!  They use rubber snakes for the same purpose.  HAHAHAH!

We use a real cat.  Works fine.

Hey, that’s hitting close to home. I live in Cobb County and my neighbor makes copper frogs that he sells for $3800.00 each (and complains that he isn’t paid enough, although it only takes about 5 hours to pound one out).  You can see them all over the small town I live in and also at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens.
