NICENESS WISHED FOR

Melbourne Age reader Dennis Whelan:

Wouldn’t it be nice if Douglas Wood donated the reputedly large sum of money he is being paid for telling his story to Sheikh Taj al-Din al-Hilali, a man given little credit but who tried to negotiate the release of other hostages in Iraq?

  1. Wouldn’t it be nice if Douglas Wood kidnapped all these idiots and treated them as his kidnappers treated him?  I, for one, would donate to make it happen.  Maybe a new reality show.

  2. I can’t bear reading letters from the Age anymore.  I like weblogs where some one says something stupid and you and respond right away.  You read a letter from the Age and you want to give the person a frisking but you can’t.
The family said that they are donating money to the an Iraqi charity as well as the families of the collegues of Douglas Wood - who were murdered shortly after they were taken - and who al-Hilaly claims the rescue operation could’ve jepordise their lives.  Hardly since they were murdered quite a while before.  Even before al-Hilaly called them honourable.

  7. Seems to me Sheikh al-Fraud has already soaked everybody for a good bit of money.  He had a nice vacation to the homeland, all expenses paid, after all.

Why? Was the money Wood’s family paid al-Hilali for doing absolutely nothing not enough?

You missed out on the bit where he made a jibe at the US.

Seems Mr. Wood has a talent for attracting arseholes.

  11. The entertainment goss on 3AW this morning put the 400 K into perspective. Agent takes 20 %, tax sees the remainder halved, and then the family is giving 100 K back to the Iraqis - the remainder is hardly a windfall.

  12. What did ex-Gitmo Mahmoud Habib do with the money he got?

I don’t seem to recall anyone bitching about that.

  13. How come there are so many people out there who want OTHER people to give their money away?

I hope Doug buys a big, fat, gas-guzzling road monster.

  14. Wow. Words fail me. If ever I wanted a bolt of righteous lightning to come down from the heavens and smite a vile low-life, now is the time, and Dennis is the low-life.

  15. It must be solar flares or planetary alignment or a jamming system or something. Aussies are renowned for their bullshit detectors - but it seems that Al Hil has convinced so many people of his change of heart as a true Aussie.
Have they forgotten all his previous faux-pas?
Haven’t they read any of the crap he has been spouting for the past few weeks regarding Doug Wood, which has either been contradicted by other independent sources or his own spokesdummies?

  16. I’m with Melanie on this one.

These days the Aged letter writers are just a bunch of whinging lefties bleating about such things as greenhouse emissions whilst idling outside Aurora’s private school, talking on the non-handsfree in the Beemer X5.

If it’s not that it’s what a f**king c**ting a**hole John Howard is...or any Liberal voter for that matter.

    Enough!!

The eds need to change the CD this one’s getting old.

A tyre iron in the groin sounds fair.

  18. Yes for flip’s sake give the Flufty Mufty some money - so he can register his LTD and get it street legal. A drivers licence & insurance would not go astray either.

    And Van Halen knows best.

  19. unless people stop buying the age it isn’t going to change any time soon - especially with that commie trog andrew jaspan in charge

sigh - remember when the age was melbourne’s paper of record?  remember when opinion was confined to the 2 inside middle pages, not lavishly sprinkled over every article? yes, you have to be a fossil to recall that far back

  20. What interests me is the similarities between Mr. Wood and that Italian commie.  I wonder if her captors murdered people in front of her?  If so, then I’ll bet those who hate Douglas Wood would not learn one iota of compassion for him if they lived through the same treatment.
I do know that if I was Mr. Wood, I would not want to relive the experience by exacting it on others.  No matter how insensitive and clueless they may be.

And finally to turn Dennis Whelan’s comment around, why doesn’t this imam al-hillary give some of his money Douglas Wood and the Iraqi soldiers who actually freed him?
