MARXIST-GREENS CRUMBLE

Reuters reports:

Many Italians went to the polls to elect their 62nd government since Second World War expressing doubts that anyone can end political stability ...

Silvio’s only just been re-elected; give him a chance. Meanwhile:

At the other end of the political spectrum, the vote for a new Marxist-Green alliance crumbled. Projections suggested the Rainbow Left would not get a single candidate into parliament.

UPDATE. Michael Ledeen:

The big news is that the Communists are gone, for the first time since the end of the Second World War. Really gone. They didn’t win a single seat in either chamber.

UPDATE II. In sadder Italian news:

An Italian woman artist who was hitch-hiking to the Middle East dressed as a bride to promote world peace has been found murdered in Turkey …

She had said she wanted to show that she could put her trust in the kindness of local people.

  3. Let me get this straight - George Bush’s policies have been such a complete disaster, and he has so completely alienated our allies, and he has so tarnished America’s image abroad, that Canada, Germany, France and Italy have elected right-wing governments?

    That about right?

  4. From The Australian:

The last Government, a 10-party, centre-left coalition led by Romano Prodi, had a one seat Senate majority and survived for only 20 months of its five-year term.

Yes, that’s a 10 (TEN) party coalition !!....only in Italy.

Now after (Editing by Elizabeth Piper) 10kae’s rooters report

A strong mandate should enable Berlusconi to push reforms through parliament, but many Italians are disillusioned with politics and doubt any government can quickly cure the ills of Italy’s fourth-largest economy.

  14. Meanwhile, our own (US) forgotten Green candidate stumped in Illinois on Monday.  Audience reaction to Ralph Nader was tepid, as reported by WEEK News 25:

"I’m definitely choosing Obama”, said ISU student Renee Costanzo.

Another ISU student, Allison Graham said, “I would probably say Obama."

Meanwhile, ISU student Ben Hansen said, “I’m not terribly impressed with any of them, but Obama’s my best bet."

Jovan Mladinic says that Ron Paul is his guy.

  15. Sort of along the lines of #3… when Berlusconi lost the few years ago it was a symbol of how much Bush and the US were hated because of Bush policies. Does this mean that Italy is now accepting and agreeing with Bush’s policies? I can hardly wait for the MSM to report that.

  16. Gee.  Burlusconi back in?  I haven’t heard much about that here in the ‘States.  I’m ig’nrant how these things work in those parliamentary systems.  But good, I liked his rhetoric, and how he directed the Italian armed forces to help out the USA and her allies.

Now, Rudd, I’ve heard all sorts of news about him being a Downunder “second coming” and how Howard (hoWARd) is supposedly disgraced.  I like Mr. Howard.  Wish he could run up north here.  He had some funky ideas, but overall, like McCain, better than the alternatives.

I still think that’s hilarious. It’s like Homer Simpson and his Grammy.

Just goes to show that if you made a few thousand comments, something worthwhile will come out. It’s like a thousand monkeys throwing a thousand turds against a wall for a thousand years.

You know, I think that’s just fine.  Because I remember high school, and peer pressure and the forces of ‘socialisation’ will ensure that the only gay couples are the brave ones whom everyone already knows about anyway.

Reckon it’s better that the gay kids learn that people are going to cheat and break your heart in high school the same way the rest of us did—why should they get to stay in the closet and miss the tears?!

  24. If I recall correctly, last time Dave S made Comment of the Year it was still January - or at least it seemed to be - which gave us 11 months knowing that each successive comment would pale by comparison. My God, that was a long, cold, bastard of a year.

This time Dave S couldn’t manage Comment of the Year until April which leads me to ask - is Dave S losing his powers? Who knows, next year it might not happen until July or August? At least - as well as my tear-soaked pillow - this is what I am clinging to right now.

  25. She had said she wanted to show that she could put her trust in the kindness of local people.

The bit that has me puzzled is who does she think (or rather who did she think) commits crimes, if not local people?  Maybe she thought only itinerants commit crime, you know, those travelling folk that no-one trusts.  People like her ....

Dave S - Saw that.  Along with 7.5 million other folks. - lol.

Is she being ‘tongue in cheek’ or is she bearing her heart on both sleeves.

I think with her TV background that she’s being ‘tongue in cheek’ which makes the statement very funny and quite profound.

    Obviously well prepared.

  38. "Tear down this wall Marxist-Green alliance!”

I shouldn’t gloat though; Italy may have finally annihilated its Communists, but they’re on the upswing here in Germany, grr. And our government is right-wing in name only; it’s really a center coalition that tries to pander mostly to the left, thanks to the aforementioned return to prominence by the commies, excuse me, socialists.

  39. That poor woman.  Her heart was in the right place, if not her understanding of people.  That’s why they need to invent something that physically weaker people, such as women traveling alone, can use to protect themselves from predators.  Something that can be used from a distance, unlike a taser or pepperspray.  Something that can prevent an attack just from the knowledge that a woman is carrying it, or even the fear that she MIGHT be carrying it.  Well, inventors, get going on this marvelous protective device before more well intentioned people like this woman are gun...I mean gone.

  40. #40 MTL. There is (or was) available to the public a small device that was created for such circumstances.

It emits a sound that is so high pitched that only the most prepared criminal would have the mind to stand still and remove it from the grasp of a frightened femme.

It was shown to me in the late 80s and I often wondered why it didn’t take off commercially.

Maybe a progressive law creator had it banned because it challenged the rights of the criminal.
