Could be game over for John Brogden.

UPDATE. Brogden has just resigned.

  1. Jeeez, he’s a silly boy. Though there is another rumour about Carr that people ‘know’ though no one is able to verify.

  2. That’s alot of stuff ups in one night.  Reminds me of my weekend.  Thank goodness I’m not a public figure.  What is the rumour Nic that you speak of?

  3. NSW Libs doing something stupid? That never happens.

  4. Ditto Melanie’s comment Nic.
He has to go. doesn’t matter if there are other animals around, he has been reported. Clearly has a problem. Unfortunately it is hard not to suspect considering how many mistakes he made in one night, that this was not a first. he would be a nightmare in a campaign.

Inappropriate and foolish, I don’t think so, appalling, Andrew Bartlett had the guts to admit he had a problem. This boyo like all such offenders doesn’t get it.

  5. He hit on reporters?  The boozehound not only has no judgment, he has no taste…

  6. It seems that all politicians are capable of doing things like this.

  7. Jeeez, he’s a silly boy. Though there is another rumour about Carr that people ‘know’ though no one is able to verify.

You’re right Nic.  Calling Helena Carr a “mail order bride” is stupid, however calling her a “fag hag” is not.

  8. I always thought Carr and Egan made a good team.

  9. I dont see the problem. Lots of ugly men like Carr have to get a bride from the Philipines or Russia.

  10. In respone to what I wrote in #1, I didn’t want to add to the rumour mill as such only to say that there is plenty of chat in Sydney from know-all’s who make comments about Carr though are unable to come up with any real evidence. To post the rumour only perpetuates this sort of thing.

My other point was that people will condemn one statement by Brogden though are more than happy hit him in another way.

  11. The bottomline is Brogden’s own behaviour disqualifies him.

An aspiring leader ought to behave with integrity, decorum and demonstrate the qualities that would convince us to vote for him.

If I wanted to be told what to do by a sleazy drunk, I would have stayed in journalism.

  12. The word on the street is that Bob is repulsed at the mere mention of bearded clam, yet salivates when contemplating a good old romping of the swords.

Not sure of the validity, but it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if this was the truth of the matter.

  13. Are these the same rumours that keep going around about Paul Keating? I’m not an ALP supporter, but how come we never hear the same stories about prominent Libs fondling the gardener/antique dealer/librarian or whatever.

  14. In Queensland the form is usually Labor Government Minister = trousers down with female ministerial aides.

None of that Oscar Wildian nonsense up here. Don’t you worry about that…

  15. Because, Mr magoo, a lot of liberal party members(and voters) probably would not care as much as the blue collar ‘faithful’ in the labot party.

But the main reason, is that factional politics in the labor party is a lot more nasty than in the liberal party (greater ideological commitment perhaps?), and a I suspect you will find that a lot of these rumours of prominent politicians from the right side of ALP politics are started by the left (and vice versa) as a way of putting pressure/payback for lost policy skirmishes within the party.

  16. UPDATE. Brogden has just resigned.

Hmm. As I thought. Only US Senator Ted Kennedy can get away with that sort of nonsense.

  17. Thanks, entropy. There’s a reek of old-fashioned, Irish Catholic, blue-collar hypocrisy in all this. It’s OK apparently to be caught out like Joe Tripodi, getting off with a (female) Democrat staffer at the Parliamentary Xmas party; or to be mired in corruption allegations, as he is. Branch-stacking, bribe-taking, little mate- supporting behaviour is accepted as the norm in the ALP. But for a male MP to show any interest in the same sex (females don’t seem to matter), and the gossip mill starts to run riot. Just as well they didn’t try to recruit Ian Roberts for Maroubra.

  19. Brogden really picked a trifecta!
    I won’t miss him he’s a labor clone,supports heroin injection rooms etc.
Pleased to see JWH brush him off.
For him to tell the pres of the young libs to “take a long hard look at himself” is ironic. What a party animal(apologies to animals).

  20. Another pisstank bites the dust.
Barto and Brogden can have a few coldies together “for the good times”

Do these dills really believe no one is watching their behaviour?

Bob Hawke gave up the turps when he was PM, but he is making up for it now.

  21. so it’s ok to preside over monumental cockups that ruin people’s lives (rail disasters, hospitals that kill people, no water, crap education, redfern, macquarie fields etc etc etc etc) but you can’t get a bit pissed & make tasteless remarks

at this rate of galloping political correctness everyone in australia (and i mean everyone - we’ve all said dumb things)will have to gaffer tape their mouths shut permanently soonish

  22. ...“how come we never hear the same stories about prominent Libs fondling the gardener/antique dealer/librarian or whatever.”
That’s because it would never happen, Mr Magoo

  23. Blerko, so it’s OK for pollies to have sex in their parliamentary offices, as long as it’s consensual. Well, that lets Joe Tripodi off the hook, I guess.

So the message is let’s get sex out of the toilets and parks and back into offices and motels where it belongs.

  24. I am visiting Malaysia at the moment.  Today, the Brogden resignation is on the front pages of both the 2 English language dailies, The New Straits Times amd The Star.  Did anyone ever refer to Annita Keating in similar terms?

  26. Well, it’s all over the morning news on the teev today that Mr Brogden tried to top himself. He was apparently found in his electoral office unconscious and with some sort of injury.

That’s from both Today and Sunrise, (no links yet)
