LESSON IN SPORTS WRITING

From reader Geoffrey Gold, a comprehensive account of yesterday’s Indonesian soccer final between teams from Jakarta and Jayapura:

Entertaining and attacking game—two goals each—and surprisingly won in extra time by Jayapura.

The Jakarta fans went mental and spent the next hour rioting.

There. All you need to know.

  1. Soccer, the truly global game, doesn’t matter where you are; if your team looses you riot.

  3. Heh… Indonesia is maturing. They are now having many features of Europeanesque democracy; free elections, a pompous judiciary and now, rioting soccer fans :-)

  4. You would have to be mad to play football with a round ball, and even more mad to watch it. It is just not natural and it is hardly surprising that it stimulate bystanders to engage in wild and disorderly behaviour.

  7. In American sportswriting, that’s known as “The Skinny”. Boil down salient points to (hopefully) one sentence. Here’s my edit:

Entertaining, attacking game—two goals each—surprise extra time win by Jayapura—
Jakarta fans went mental and rioted.

BTW, the US is already in the World Cup next summer in Doucheland. Oz must win a playoff series vs a South American side TBD but the word about German beer is out so I expect the Aussies to fight like hell and get there. C’mon Lads!

  8. Okay, so it’s a Margo-ish sentence.
