LAWRENCE OF FANTASIA

Former WA Premier Carmen Lawrence—whose previous difficulties recalling the past led to her being dubbed Lawrence of Amnesia—now invents the past, saying of John Howard:

Talking about Australia as the deputy sheriff in the region, I mean it’s not inclined to make you well loved and respected in the region either.

Howard said no such thing.

  1. “Talking about Australia as the deputy sheriff in the region, I mean it’s not inclined to make you well loved and respected in the region either.”

Well, not if you’re a Barney Fife type of deputy sheriff, no (Don Knotts: peace be with him). I always pictured Australia as a kind of Chuck Norris sort of lawman.

  3. I have a very high regard for John Howard - he has made Australia serious and respected as a first-division player…...........Australia has had some real disasters as Prime Minister Mr Whitlam, Mr Keating…....

  7. Where’s Carmen Lawranda?  Is there any region where she is ‘well-loved and respected’?

  8. One thing that really annoys me is Carmen continually getting held up as a poster child for the alleged glass ceiling in Australian politics.

Carmen’s problem is that she wrecked her own career with the Lawrence of Amnesia episode, it wasn’t some vast conspiracy of men out to get women. She screwed up and she still hasn’t paid the price for it.

    She is Australia’s Teddy Kennedy.

  14. Howzat,
During World War II the US Navy adopted a gray uniform, which most officers hated for its lack of gold braid and traditional blue.  The story goes that one destroyer captain, who was a dandy, had his specially tailored and, to keep them properly clean, had his uniforms washed by an especially skilled washerwoman in Pearl Harbor.

Once they were out an especially long time, and he used up all his clean uniforms.  He ordered the communications officer to send a message to have the waherwoman waiting at dockside when the destroyer came into port in order to speed things up.  The message was sent Be sure to have the Commander’s woman waiting for him at dockside.

The captain was furious, saying the message made him look like some kind of lothario.  He ordered a correction sent.  The com officer sent it:  reference previous message, insert washer between the Commander and his woman.

Story from Ensign O’Toole and Me, but I can’t remember the author’s name, unfortunately.

  15. I was in the public gallery of the House of Reps the day Lawrence of Amnesia used the words ‘I can’t recall’ over 100 times during question time in relation to the Eastman affair. Not only was the public gallery in stitches, but the press gallery was a mass of shaking heads and giggles for an hour or more. Credibility - zero. Carman Lawrence and the truth; never the twain shall meet.
P/S. #14. Google shows the ‘Ensign O’Toole’ series of books were written by William J. (Bill) Lederer. They sound good!
