KRISTIANS FOR KYOTO

There goes the last lingering thread of my Anglicanism:

A key international body of the Anglican Church has declared the wilful destruction of the environment to be a sin as a core group of Australian religious leaders have placed their political weight behind a campaign to fight global warming.

  1. Was Jesus guilty of wilful destruction of the environment?

    Matthew 21
[19] And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever. And presently the fig tree withered away.
[20] And when the disciples saw it, they marvelled, saying, How soon is the fig tree withered away!

  2. I don’t see the point of your question, rexie.

The Anglican Church hasn’t had anything to do with Jesus in years.

  3. I agree with Barbara.

Can the Anglicans still consider themselves belonging to a “Church”?

The ratbag element is taking over.

  4. An organization that does not confirm to the basic tenets of its own textbook - The Bible.  Why am I not surprised that it would choose to take a pro Kyoto view.  i wouldn’t expect them to undertake any unbiassed research before comong up with the declaration.

  5. Is the Anglican Church taking up a cause the activist equivalent to “jumping the shark”?

  6. The truth is, environmentalism has largely replaced Christianity as the religion of choice of Western sophisticates.  In place of the concept of eternal life, we have the sustainability of the planet.  In place of the concept of sin, we have man-made pollution of the environment.  Reason and science have very little to do with it, but it satisfies a psychological need in a godless world.  The Anglican church is responding to that trend.

  7. PW, I think I just heard a loud “Eyyyy”. And yep they’re bored with God so they’ve sold out.

  8. The Anglican Church would do just fine if it would overthrow its leadership.

  11. Isn’t lying a sin?  And if global warming isn’t a lie, how come their precious computer models can’t predict the weather at my house three days in advance?

  12. As a Catholic atheist I’m always amused at the mainstream churches attempts to gain relevancy by adopting trendy causes. Considering the way Anglicans have been going I’d imagine there aren’t many things left they’d genuinely consider sinful. At least there adding some to the list.

  13. 12. A “Catholic atheist”?
That is either the best oxymoron I’ve seen in years, or a terrible indictment on the Catholic Church.

  14. I’ve been a member of the Congregationalist (United Church of Christ) church for most of my life.  I’ve put up with the left leaning silliness of the national organization becuase the local churches don’t take a whole lot of direction from them.  (That’s one of the things I’ve liked about Congregationalism, the autonomy).  However, their latest stunt (to divest investment in companies who do business with Isreal) is not silly; it is abbhorent.  And it is the last straw.  I can’t convince myslef that if I stayed with the church, I wouldn’t be complicit in and enabling evil.

Unfortunately, I don’t subscribe to the theological beliefs of those churches with whom I have a kindred political belief.  I guess I’ll just have to start my own religion. . . . it worked out pretty well for L. Ron Hubbard

  15. DropDeadUgly - They could take it as a compliment. I was raised catholic, went to a jesuit school (and appreciated their education) and still follow the machinations of the church with some interest. I also defend their right to have doctrines which they see as soundly based on the scriptures and to resist changes which would only serve to please current societal fads. I just don’t happen to believe in god which, I admit, does present some problems from a religious standpoint. :-)

  16. I’m a Wiccan and I still know Kyoto is crap.  There’s nothing wrong with caring about the environment and ecology, but the sheer credulity of Kyoto supporters is astounding.

This is a non sequitir to jump from opposing wilful destruction of the environment (who’s for that?) and to launch a political campaign against global warming.

The scientific case for global warming is unproven.  Furthermore, if global warming is occuring the case that this would be a bad thing for the environment is unproven.  Even further, the case for human causation of global warming is lightyears from being scientifically proven.  What’s more is the case that human action could reverse global warming is even possible is unproven or superior than simply accomodating to global warming isn’t even on the radar screen, much less a scientific fact.
    This is complete irrationality.

  19. Frank H — I have no beef with God but I look on priests and preachers with a jaundiced eye.  But I do miss the Latin Mass.

  20. Richard Mc enroe- And with good reason (your comments on the priests and preachers). I am too young to remember the Latin Mass but it seems it would have been ideal to allow your mind to drift off rather than having to pay attention. The english mass kept intruding on my thoughts. I suppose my view could be charactured as wanting to rescue organised religion from God but we all have our little quirks.

  22. I am happy to call myself an Anglican and have my child christened an Anglican inorder to get them into a top school. I’d become a Catholic if they had the best schools in my City, but they don’t.

Funnily enough I went to a Methodist/Uniting Church School that was very good, but my family became Anglicans while I was there because Mum and Dad, being rusted on Libs, got pissed off by the politics preached at them in the Uniting Church.  I enjoyed the change because, all of a sudden Alcohol was no longer seen as an evil sin.
