JIHAD20
The ABC’s Alison Caldwell previews events in Melbourne:
The G20 summit gets underway with a dinner tonight, with the conference beginning tomorrow morning. A large but peaceful protest march is expected in the city tomorrow afternoon.
So organisers promised. But the protesting classes routinely lie, as the ABC is now aware:
A protest against the G20 Summit in Melbourne has turned violent with some members of the crowd kicking police horses and throwing eggs at officers.
About 2,000 chanting protesters have marched through Melbourne towards the venue of the G20.
A police van has been destroyed and barricade lines broken as the protest turns ugly.
Protesters have thrown glass bottles, flares and steel rods at police, and upturned barricades were also hurled at police in riot gear.
Police officers on horses were forced to move away from protesters after some kicked the legs of the animals.
Few arrests are reported; apparently the police have adopted a “maximum tolerance” policy. Palestinians were proudly represented:

Go to the above link (or visit Andrew Landeryou) for further images. Among other incidents:
Several police have been injured in the running clashes, a police spokeswoman said. One officer sustained a suspected broken wrist and had been taken to hospital.
A television journalist was reportedly set upon by 20 people and kicked and punched.
We await condemnation of this from Reporters Without Borders.
Demonstrators, many masked and covered head-to-toe in white protective suits, marched on the police lines, throwing glass bottles, bags of rubbish and plastic milk crates. Metal barricades and water-filled plastic barriers were overturned and used as battering rams against lines of police.
Naturally, police are blamed:
Police widened the security cordon around the G20 summit over night, bundling protesters out of the new no-go zone and closing Collins St.
One of the protesters described the police action as “provocative”.
Jessica Morrison, a member of the G20 Christian Collective, said police approached eight members of the group about 3.45am and told them to pack up their “embassy” on the corner of Collins and Exhibition streets and move on ...
She said that, while the police had not been rough, “to be told to move out of sight was somewhat offensive”.
Stupid Presbyterians. ANZ bank spokesman Paul Edwards observed these offensive antics:
(W)hen they came in they bowled over our branch manager, and at our Swanston Street branch in Chinatown, brochures were trashed and a charity collection box had been smashed open and strewn all over the ground.
Smash the state, kids. One charity collection box at a time.
Some of the police in the pic are wearing gloves.
That’s provocative. The message it sends is, go ahead and bite, I’m covered.Posted by SwinishCapitalist on 2006 11 18 at 05:32 AM • permalinkSome more photos of the aftermath here.
And the latest from the local left-wing news site, here.

You don’t need fancy riot equipment and shields and helmets and gloves and batons.
You just issue the mounted elements with sabres and lances and yell, “CHARGE!”
It could be the down under version of the running of the bulls, except that more idiots get gored.
Posted by mr creosote on 2006 11 18 at 05:51 AM • permalinkThe interesting thing about Landeryou’s pics appear to be that he wasn’t around when the real stuff went down? So where was he? As someone else suggested, perhaps he was sitting pretty chomping away in the MacDonald’s at the top end of Collins St!
Posted by TeamSlanderyou on 2006 11 18 at 06:44 AM • permalinkThe police in Melbourne have been more reactive than proactive IMO. They knew that there would be protests and violence, and cordoned off areas and put police on barricade duty. Why didn’t the police identify the rent-a-crowd protestors before hand and get them out of the way? A dilemma I suppose for the police because they knew certain individuals would commit offences, but they couldn’t do anything until the violence occurred. Hmmm …
In the 50s, non local undesirables were driven to the town limits of my dad’s town and told to get back to Brisbane. In the 90s, a Water Police mate said they used to relocate water bourne protestors paddling on Sydney Harbour to the other end of the harbour to ensure they didn’t cause mischief.
I wonder what the NSW Police will do for the 2007 APEC Meeting scheduled for Sydney in September 2007? Will it be wait for the violence, or identify the mischief makers and side line them? A question maybe for Premier Iemma or prospective Premier Debnham.
Hey at least one white suited feral piss thrower got smacked in the head!
Mr Rae, said he was trying to push a barrier forward toward the lines of police blocking Collins Street, when one officer lent over the barricade and hit him on the head with his baton.

It seems that “civil” disobedience has ceased to be civil. Par for the course. In this case, as it was in Seattle, it wasn’t meant to be civil. People who plan on peaceful protest do not hide their faces, wear protective clothing, come prepared with water balloons filled with urine, or carry glass bottles and other weapons. They want the police to be violently reactionary, so they come with prepared to provoke it.
They get away with it because they know that they are in a win-win situation. If the police react the way they ought to to such provocation, then they have their masked visages, complete with sound-bites, all over the news. If the police are tolerant, they are free to wreck destruction to their vicious heart’s content.
The problem is with the tolerance of the people. Too many are quick to blame the police for any problems, and then blame them again if they meet aggression with “disproportionate” force—which is what is required to stop any aggression.
This is the same attitude that is keeping us from fighting a proper war against the Islamic-fascists.
With all this kinder-gentler toleration of bad behavior, is it any wonder that the world has become so dangerous? Every kind of vermin can smell this kind of fear, and will crawl out from under his rock to take advantage. The actions of a bully are always the same; from the school-yard to the international stage, appeasement only emboldens bullies.
Oooh! it looks like a rent-a-smelly-lefty has found its way to Tim’s Blog!.
“TeamSlanderyou” seems to be the nom de “Christ I’m so clever, stirring up the neo-cons”
As someone else suggested
Who, exactly? Hmmm… that sounds a lot like something you’d hear on an ABC report. Maybe an SBS reporter moonlighting?
Who gives a rats. Hey, kid - TeamSlanderyou. You’re mummy’s caling. Piss off.

Well, yes, we do, as it happens. Because there’s a difference between civil protest and outright thuggery.
Whoever heard of protesters throwing piss bombs twenty years ago? Are we going to wait until the police are being pelted with shit bombs before we say, enough?Posted by SwinishCapitalist on 2006 11 18 at 07:25 AM • permalinkChristine Nixon’s style of policing again. This is what happens you put a woman in charge of the police. You get a talking, caring, sympathetic style of policing, instead of a good walloping.
Nixon is also the person who opposes our police being properly armed. US readers will be amused to learn Victorian police are still equipped with Smith & Wesson revolvers.

Tolerance be blowed - it’s common sense. Much work follows an arrest - interviews, paperwork, court appearances, &c. And the hooligans are invariably acquitted by touchy-feely magistrates like Jelena Popovic. So why would the police bother with arrests? Waste of time and effort.
This why Gunns are suing the asses off greenies. The police won’t act so the last resort is to civil action.
Posted by walterplinge on 2006 11 18 at 07:46 AM • permalinkI saw on the news video of a feral female (I assume this as it was wearing a tutu) doing a sort of gyrating hip-thrusty dance in front of the police line. Presumably she was mocking them in some artistic-expression way. Her message wasn’t really clear, unless her goal was making the police vomit. It was simply nauseous to watch her dance. I feel sorry for the police - I can only imagine they must be very professional to restrain themselves when faced with these idiots.

Read what the lefties are saying lol, its the Right Wing secret police who started the violence!
“Teamslanderyou” has been banned. Because I care. Someone who sets up a pathetic webpage like this needs all the encouragement we can give him to get a life.

“I can only imagine they must be very professional to restrain themselves when faced with these idiots.”
Too bloody right, I’d have just shot the cants (sic) in the kneecaps. Its hard to throw something, or run away when you cant stand up.
If you go to one of those protests with your face covered, you deserve to be locked up, or preferably removed from the gene pool in the fastest way possible. A 30-06 HPBT fired from a roof top should do the job nicely…
Posted by The_Wizard_of_WOZ on 2006 11 18 at 09:33 AM • permalinkMost of these ferals were only there to cause maximum trouble - not to actually protest civilly - how many would really know what the G20 stands for?
Then after they threw their urine balloons, kicked some horses and smoked some more funny stuff it was probably off to Maccas for a Value Meal

I’ve heard it said that mounted police in New Orleans would break your arm if you went to touch their horses, even just to pet them. I’ve also heard of people being kicked by the horses in rowdy crowds (they don’t like people close to their hindquarters). Wonder how the cowardly little kickers would have liked being kicked back?
Whatever happened to good, old fashioned tear gas?

It always is. Buncha pampered young thugs go to a “peace” march with Molotovs, faces concealed, doing their best to work up a mob response from among their own ranks, and it’s always the secret police who start the trouble.
Posted by Rob Crawford on 2006 11 18 at 12:50 PM • permalinkI was working in Seattle during the WTO protests, and for the first time it made me bitterly regret that the US does not maintain a troop of Cossacks for riot control. The same spoiled shits used the same tactics to trash the city.
And of course, as the police stood politely aside, they got blamed for the violence.

Not too surprising that the anti-Globalization scum should be boosters of the Palestinian scum. One group of fascist scum will boost another such group.
(Calling them swine instead of scum would be insulting to good-hearted pigs everywhere.)
As for dealing with such people I prefer the advice from the song Bonnie Dundee:
To the Lords of Convention ‘twas Claverhouse spoke,
Ere the King’s crown go down there are crowns to be broke.
Posted by Michael Lonie on 2006 11 18 at 09:05 PM • permalinkThese people are not democratic in the slightest. I don’t care what they think but they couldn’t give a toss about other people’s opinions.
We have to sit here and watch them create this destruction because it is part of free speech. Ok, we will and shall.
But the point is that these people don’t appreciate free speech at all. Where is their civility?
You can always count on the Palestinians being represented at these types of rallies. Even if the rally isn’t about Israel, it doesn’t matter, the Palestinians are always there. Ironic - these guys want to abolish free trade, which means that groups like the Palestinians would suffer even more, even though they are already fucked because of their leaders.
These protesters are an abomination. They should all take a cold shower.

Don’t tell me, lemme guess: these pampered asswipes have never been disciplined for anything their whole lives, but have been given whatever they asked for. Now, when told “no” by persons of authority, they throw a righteous tantrum and think they’ve accomplished something.
Pathetic losers.
