BOSTON DRINKING COLLECTIVE CURSED

Stupid Patrick Kennedy. He shouldn’t have made those claims about Phenergan or Ambien or whatever they’re calling vodka these days. Instead, he should have told the police: “I am cursed. This is no fault of mine; it’s a family curse, and as such I am powerless to anything about it.” The media falls for it every time:

Thursday’s car crash, though, near the Capitol may just be the latest installment of what some consider to be the curse over the Kennedy family.

The curse renders Kennedys mere passive bystanders as events occur around them:

Ted Kennedy was at the wheel when his car drove off a bridge, killing a young female passenger, at Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts in 1969.

At the wheel he may have been, but the curse was driving. Melbourne’s Age also buys the curse line, and Rupert Cornwell at the Independent (“Curse of the car crash strikes the Kennedy clan once more”) anticipates cruel Chappaquiddick-style gags:

That affair became the butt of cruel humour, and this new accident involving Patrick promises more of the same.

All part of the curse, Rupert.

UPDATE. Thomas Lifson:

Cynthia McKinney’s reaction to the obvious and blatant favoritism enjoyed by Patrick Kennedy is likely to be something to savor. She is already on the record about the indignities she received at the hand of a white cop. But now she sees that for the white boy, supervisors stepped in, relieving the officers at the scene and driving the staggering Kennedy home.

She faces potential legal jeopardy, and now a rich white boy walks away without so much as a breathalyzer test from circumstances that would ordinarily demand a drunk driving investigation. At least one cop reportedly says he smelled alcohol.

UPDATE II. Andrea Peyser:

What a wimp.

Even by the exceedingly high standards of scandal pioneered by the House of Kennedy, Rep. Patrick is no JFK.

When he played bumper cars in our nation’s capital at 3 in the morning, appearing intoxicated - but later insisting he was just on pills - the shnook was alone.

That is, except for his pathetic bag of excuses and his famous name, which still holds the power to get a guy out of a jam without a Breathalyzer or a body-cavity search.

A body-cavity search of a Kennedy? They might find Arthur Schlesinger, Jr.

  1. Ted Kennedy is the “butt of cruel humour” because he killed a woman and then skated out of any charges thanks to his family influence and money.

The only good news in his son’s scandal is that no innocent people were killed.  How long until Patrick Kennedy drives drunk again?  Who gets killed next?  And when?

That “curse” is just an excuse that enables Patrick Kennedy to continue being a drunk, in the great tradition of his father.  A member of Congress to be sure, but still a drunk.  Alcholism is not a disease.

  2. The “curse” is but one side of the media coin. The other side is that they’re our freakin’ royalty. A year comes off my life everytime so dumbass reporter tells me that those low-class sacks of crap Kennedys are supposed to be whatever passes for royalty in this country. No, they are not.
I’d like to throw that particular media coin in the fires of Mount Doom.  Or maybe take off and nuke that coin from orbit. Something.

  5. The “Kennedy Curse” is a load of bunk. Look at the Kennedy family losses - and I’m not including the self-inflicted ones - and they’re no more or less cursed than any other family. People get sick. People die. That’s life.

My mom and her two sisters all lost their husbands in the same year. None was over 50 years old. Nobody talks about a “curse.”

The Kennedys are royalty insofar as they are privileged, wealthy, powerful, above the law, incapable of curbing their vulgar appetites, and their dynasty was founded on criminality.

  6. The first Kennedy who realises he has to do something great in his own right in order to promote himself for high office - which they all seem to want to do - will be the one with half a chance of doing something worthwhile. I mean, however highly you rank JFK as a President, there was a man who had strings pulled to get his sickly self into a war. The way the K grand-kids go into representative politics just because of their surname at, say, 21 (like Patrick) is ridiculous.

  8. The Kennedy’s, suffer from something called KARMA…bad karma. Stems from the patriarch Joseph P. the Senior, I believe.

Rumored to be a rum runner (probably was, someone had to assist Capone…lol) during the U.S. prohibition days, a non-interventionist during WWII…believing that Neville Chamberlain was on the correct course with Hitler…some even said that Joseph the Elder, was anti-Semitic.

Yes, the Kennedys…they aren’t cursed enough, actually.

How many of us could be responsible for a young womens death…and STILL be elected to the U.S. Senate?

How many of us could have the actions and symptoms of bi-polarism, drink scads, take pills and be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives?

At least ‘they’ got one of the related clan (Michael Skakel) BEFORE he used his 9-Iron again.

As the Wall Street Journal mentioned yesterday…certainly these Kennedy’s have enough money to hire chauffeurs.

  9. Beside the fact that they are all apparently alcoholics, part of the Kennedy “curse” is the attention paid to them by the media “because that’s what the public wants”.  I remember the adulation given to that family in the 60’s and 70’s; it was disgusting then and it’s disgusting now.  They put their pants on one leg at a time like everyone else, and if fate had played Joe Sr. another hand, they’d all be living in trailer parks in West Virginia or someplace.

  14. Well, the two who were assassinated might be thought to be a bit cursed, and maybe the one who lost a leg to bone cancer as a child.

But the only curse the drunk-driving Kennedies might be said to have is that their wealth, power, and fame shield them from ever having to pay any real price for their actions, which might actually help them fix themselves.

Or maybe it’s more that they are themselves a curse on the American people… (but saying that just means that we’re avoiding responsibility for fixing ourselves.)

  18. The US government is “cursed” (or more like plagued) by the Kennedys.  I was thinking about this when I read about it in the paper this morning.  He’s Ted Kennedy’s son and apparently is following in daddy’s cover-up footsteps (he left the scene after drunk-driving his car off of a bridge in the Chappaquiddick River, leaving the young lady he intended to have adultery with in the car to drown - he got away with it) So, now Pat will do the same thing, making it much more difficult for those who truly need the drug to get it.  He’ll gladly cause hundreds of thousands of people to needlessly suffer just to save his own sorry ass.
The Kennedy Clan so arrogantly believes they are above EVERYONE else and above the law.
The bum was drunk, he crashed his car, got special consideration from the DC cops (no breath-analyzer test - and a ride home) and now will weasel his way out by blaming it on Ambien and pain meds.
    I loath those people.

As for their “curse”? Most of tend to live life on the edge, and sometimes when you hang out on the edge you fall off.

But Pat will skate.  Of that, I have no doubt.

Curious observation: The left insists that the Bushes achieved their status by dirty dealing (“Bush crime family”, etc.) and had Nazi ties. They claim these are bad things that should be counted against the Bushes.

The Kennedys, on the other hand, really did achieve their status by crime—smuggling booze during prohibition and manipulating stock prices in the run-up to the Depression—and Joe Kennedy Sr. resigned from his post as ambassador to England because he disagreed with Roosevelt’s policy of “confronting” Germany.

    Even PBS has to admit:

1938: Ambassador Kennedy argues for co-existence with dictatorships in a speech at the Trafalgar Day dinner of the Navy League.

Then we have the reputed mob ties, the abuses of power, the rapes, etc…

So why doesn’t the left go after the “Kennedy crime family”?

  31. A hostess at the Hawk ’n’ Dove bar, a popular Capitol Hill watering hole, told the Herald that Kennedy was drinking in the hours before cops say they watched his Mustang swerve eratically, nearly hit a police cruiser and smash into a concrete security barricade. link

Patrick’s father is a drunk with a ruined liver and his mother is a drunk arrested at least four times for DUI (the 4th arrest resulted in two years probation—imagine if it were you or I) who finally had to be scraped out of the gutter. His grandfather was an anti-Semitic, Nazi-appeasing, stock market manipulating bootlegger in league with organized crime who, after having his retarded daughter lobotomized because she didn’t fit in with the healthy robust image he wished to create for his family, went on to fix two elections so that his son could become the first Irish-Catholic president (Jack would joke that his father used to say “now look, I’m not gonna pay for a landslide”). You could say that Patrick comes by it honestly.

How sad for Rhode Island that the only person in the entire state they can find to represent them in the House of Representatives is a spoiled, privileged, carpetbagging, bi-polar, substance abusing trust fund brat who, by his own admission, never worked a day in his life. And I want to personally thank the people of RI for sending Patrick Kennedy to Washington to make the laws that I have to obey.

I take Ambien occasionally and was given a shot of Phenergan once (and neither is pain medication to which Kennedy claims addiction). On no occasion have I experienced red, watery eyes, slurred speech or unsure balance (of course, I’ve never mixed the two).  Check out Page 6, Patrick’s statement, of the police report (available at The Smoking Gun). Poor Patrick must be a delicate flower indeed to have experienced this level of impairment just from taking those two benign drugs.

But, Teddy, what if I’m pregnant?

Don’t worry, Mary Jo, we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.

  40. Seriously, to US readers - is that the end of it?  Any further investigation of the accident, or is it that because he wasn’t breathalysed at the scene there’s nothing to pin him obn, so end-of-story?

God, if that happened in most places in Oz, the papers of all colours would be screaming for blood, as the popularity (with readers) of getting a politican screwed for drunk driving would outweigh any political leanings.  The police commissioner would step in and announce a special investigation, the matter would be closed down and 6 months later they would quietly announce “he’s clean”.  But the papers would still have a field day and the public would enjoy the media lynching.

  41. SCD, I hope it’s not the end.  The problem is that the Kennedy clan is notorious for skating away from criminal charges.

Patrick Kennedy’s father, Senator Ted Kennedy, killed a young woman through negligence in 1969.  He got off with a slap on the wrist…..with multiple unanswered questions.  This is not the only example from that august family.

The MSM tends to brown nose the Kennedy clan, seeing them as an “American royalty”.  Other than mostly being a royal pain in the ass (the clan is not all idiots, the smart ones stay out of sight), this is a silly title.

I would love to see a media lynching.  The MSM was all over Bush in the 2000 elections when it turned out he had a couple DWIs 40 years ago.  Now, it’s all crickets chirping.
