INTENSITY UNNERVING
Progressive Rebecca Traister is troubled by her Hillary-hatin’ comrades:
One of my closest girlfriends, an Obama voter, told me of a drink she’d had with a politically progressive man who made a series of legitimate complaints about Clinton’s policies before adding that when he hears the senator’s voice, he’s overcome by an urge to punch her in the face.
As Michelle Goldberg says in the above-linked piece: “I suppose that the intensity of Obama supporters can be unnerving and hard to relate to.”
UPDATE. Obama secures the stoner vote:
Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters has attacked democratic hopeful Hillary Clinton – calling the senator from New York “ghastly”.
Waters, who admits to being a fan of Clinton’s rival for the democratic nomination, Barack Obama, said that Clinton would invade Iran if she was elected America’s next president.
UPDATE II. Mickey Kaus decodes Obama:
Once the Pennsylvanians get some jobs back, they’ll change and become as enlightened as Obama or the San Franciscans to whom he was talking. That’s the clear logic of his argument. Superiority of this sort - not crediting the authenticity and standing of your subject’s views - is a violation of social equality, which is a more important value for Americans than money equality. Liberals tend to lose elections when they forget that.
UPDATE III. The WSJ’s John Fund:
Barack Obama’s San Francisco-Democrat comment last week – about how alienated working-class voters “cling to guns or religion” – is already famous. But the fact that his aides tell reporters he is privately bewildered that anybody took offense is even more remarkable.
Boy this Hillary vs. Obama slugfest has been fun to watch. The sad thing for Hillary is, had she run in 2004 she would likely had been the Democratic candidate, not Kommando Kerry, Hero for Our Time. Alas, she waited to run until someone even more liberal than she decided to run.
Ah, such is life. N’est–ce pas?

It’ll be interesting to see what happens to the Democrats when the nominee is chosen. The antipathy between the Obama and Hillary camps seems so deep that I don’t see how they are going to get together and unite behind the eventual nominee. I know the party leadership will make the appropriate noises, but what will the rank & file do? Good times, good times.Posted by Infidel Librarian on 2008 04 15 at 01:17 PM • permalinkThere’s a simple solution for the Dems. Have the party leadership meet with the candidates before the convention and tell them, “The superdelegates will make their decision. You both will accept it. The winner will offer the loser the VP slot. The loser will enthusiastically accept.” It would be an unbeatable ticket.
I find it hard to believe their egos couldn’t accept this. And the loser’s followers should be adequately mollified by having their candidate as the presumptive nominee in ‘16.
#3—Don’t ignore the robot DNA of the average progressive. Marching to orders is what they do best.

Infidel, I think the good times may just be starting.
Picture this scenario:
Obama gets nominated (which seems very likely), then loses the election to McCain.
There Will Be Blood (in the Democratic Party).
Obamaists will blame Clinton for losing them the election. Clintonistas will proclaim loud and long that their candidate would’ve beat McCain but lost the nomination due to the old-time sexism of the Obamaists. They may just splinter their party into a couple of warring parties.
This may be fun for another year or two.

I have no doubt you’re right about many being able to suck it up and vote for the nominee, even if it isn’t the one they supported. However - I’d love to hear them explain it, especially some of the folks whose posts I’ve been reading at other sites. The insults, the denigration of the other candidate - as paco notes, family fights ARE the most vicious!Posted by Infidel Librarian on 2008 04 15 at 03:20 PM • permalinkSoberHT asked:

So much for progressive pacifism and hope and change.
If Hillary won the presidency (God forfend), I’d be unhappy, but I could tough it out. But if Obama won, I’d be tempted to pull a leftism and flee the country. (Not really. No latte-sipping do-nothing socialist pantywaist is going to run me out of my country.)
“It would be an unbeatable ticket.”
Not.
It would be a ticket which magnified the strengths of neither and multiplied the negatives of both.Posted by formerly Huck Foley on 2008 04 15 at 03:49 PM • permalink#11 IL—That’s not how progressives work. If they go that angle it will be as if all the hatred never happened. Not a word in the press, in public, or in print… until someone slips up and becomes vulnerable. Then it will all be resurrected in a geyser of vengefulness. Look at how so many Democrats ‘suddenly’ discovered the amorality of the Clintons this year.

#16 - Richard - Yes, I know all will be forgiven, and a round of “Kumbaya” will ensue. I’ve seen it happen before. It just feels less plausible this time, due to the various lib prejudices that have been tapped and released in this “historic” race. I’ve read some seriously ugly comments out there -and it’s mostly blue-on-blue action.
Posted by Infidel Librarian on 2008 04 15 at 04:48 PM • permalinkHillary would not accept the VP slot—she’d be too old to be the next Pres. candidate. And Bill couldn’t abide waiting around, either.
As far as the O-Man as VP, Hillary has higher negatives than any candidate ever measured, and he’s trying to catch up. Add their negative sentiment together, it’s too much weight to carry.
I think Barry would choose not to be part of the train wreck and get to play victim for his next run on the I Told You So ticket.

I’m not sure…can you really see Hillary running at age 68? It’s not like that’s old, technically, but I certainly think there are different rules for women in that regard, and even moreso in the Democratic Party which seems to favour the “fresh face” approach to selecting candidates over the Repub’s “okay, whose turn is it?”.
Obama might have the youth to wait out eight years, but I wonder if his camp might be afraid of him being Quayle-ified in the process. The whole campaign has had a tinge of “the less they know about Barry, the better”.

#14 Huck - ‘unbeatable’? More like unbearable for the rest of us.
Well, take it up with Dave S, with whom I’m here disagreeing. To opportunistically expound on that:
Hopey Obie McChangey is a novelty candidate, whose main appeal lies in looking different, hence the “Changeity changey change” drumbeat of his whole candidacy. It sure ain’t the depth of his thinking, the originality of his stale leftist ideas, or the inspirational fire of his rhetoric. Bluntly put:
Obama – melanin = Dennis Kucinich.
Shrillary Evita McHildabeast is the “experienced” candidate, whose alleged appeal lies in being the ultimate “insider.” (*)
So either one of them, as the other’s VP, negates everything interesting about the other one’s fundamental appeal.(* you know, the way Yoko Ono was the ultimate Beatle. snort!)

Posted by stackja1945 on 2008 04 15 at 07:24 PM • permalinkIt is also disturbing that people raised in western democracies are so susceptible to leadership cults. It is happening in Australia, with grown journalists almost brought to tears when talking about Kevin Rudd. Tony Delroy on ABC Nightlife last night was gushing about the “amazing” ability of Rudd to talk both English and Mandarin. But there are millions of people fluent in both these languages - go to Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong and or even to Dixon Street in Sydney. It isn’t strange at all. Why, Rudd even has a cabinet minister who speaks Mandarin as well as he does, Penny Wong. Yet to the Canberra press corps, Rudd speaking Mandarin is a super power, like X-ray vision.

I’m particularly fond of the Daily Thought at the end.AMAZINGLY SIMPLE HOME REMEDIES
1. IF YOU’RE CHOKING ON AN ICE CUBE, SIMPLY POUR A CUP OF BOILING WATER DOWN YOUR THROAT. PRESTO! THE BLOCKAGE WILL INSTANTLY REMOVE ITSELF.2. AVOID CUTTING YOURSELF WHEN SLICING VEGETABLES BY GETTING SOMEONE ELSE TO HOLD THE VEGETABLES WHILE YOU CHOP.
3. AVOID ARGUMENTS WITH THE FEMALES ABOUT LIFTING THE TOILET SEAT - USE THE SINK.
4. FOR HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE SUFFERERS ~ SIMPLY CUT YOURSELF AND BLEED FOR A FEW MINUTES, THUS REDUCING THE PRESSURE ON YOUR VEINS. REMEMBER TO USE A TIMER.
5. A MOUSE TRAP PLACED ON TOP OF YOUR ALARM CLOCK WILL PREVENT YOU FROM ROLLING OVER AND GOING BACK TO SLEEP AFTER YOU HIT THE SNOOZE BUTTON.
6. IF YOU HAVE A BAD COUGH, TAKE A LARGE DOSE OF LAXATIVES. THEN YOU’LL BE AFRAID TO COUGH.
7. YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN’T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN’T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.
8. REMEMBER - EVERYONE SEEMS NORMAL UNTIL YOU GET TO KNOW THEM.
9. IF YOU CAN’T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU’VE GOT AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.
DAILY THOUGHT: SOME PEOPLE ARE LIKE SLINKIES - NOT REALLY GOOD FOR ANYTHING, BUT THEY BRING A SMILE TO YOUR FACE WHEN PUSHED DOWN THE STAIRS .If you have the fortitude to read the whole of this article, you will perceive a political play upon female voters by Billary. “Oh, and my friend Synthia just gets so ... when her boyfriend cheers with Obama as if he were at a football game”.
What is truly revealing is that this screed is aimed at democrat supporters, who are clearly limousine liberals and champaign socialists; even the Obamaniacs. Completely divorced from the “real, workign world”. Obama is just oh so totally out of touch, apologizing IF his snobbery words caused offence.
Billary, at least, has the awareness that there is a touch that perhaps she can attempt to reach.
I reckon a down to Earth McCain campaign could, just possibly, win.

Posted by Wimpy Canadian on 2008 04 15 at 09:54 PM • permalinkInteresting, yet scary. I’ve witnessed people with “mild” Obamamania - I’ve heard them slobber over how the next Messiah “doesn’t care about money”, “wants to be a hero”, and will fight the “privileged few” that “control the country”. I have to suppress the urge to start singing “The Cult of Personality” out loud when I hear people having Obamisms.
Yet, I wonder how the Obamamania fares in academia overall. From my own limited observation and analysis, I deduce that the younger people (undergrads, graduate students, and post-docs) are in the tank for Obama, while the elderly, more seasoned members of academia (the professors, department heads, and deans) are holding out for Hillary (a.k.a The Dark Lord).
Posted by Gabriel Angelos on 2008 04 15 at 10:17 PM • permalinkOn the Obama/Clinton ticket…...I agree, that would be a powerful pairing, fFH, but mostly in that it would stop the civil war brewing amongst the Dhimmicrats.
Amongst the voting population? Not so much, methinks. It might be turn away voters who might have voted for either Hillary OR Obama, but not both.
This assumes, of course, that they can put aside their differences long enough to campaign, let alone occupy the White House.
And that the DNC finally grows a backbone, takes control of the situation, of course. Somehow, I just don’t see Deano doing that.
Posted by The_Real_JeffS on 2008 04 16 at 12:12 AM • permalinkIt seems to me there is hardly any daylight between the substantive positions of Obama and Hillary. I think that is what is making this campaign so bitter and vindictive. It’s a question of personalities, pure and simple, with no actual policy substance invovled. Therefore it is as petty and vicious as any such clash of personalities is.
I wonder if McCain will try to delay his VP selection until after the Dem nominee is selected? Then if the Dems pick Hillary, perhaps McCain will pick a black person as VP. If they pick Obama, he picks a woman. Either one would be full pander mode, but might strip away disaffected supporters of the Dem loser.

Will your wonky mates still be going over the top at Pine Gap in your absence. I hope their infamy doesn’t make you jealous. Maybe you can pick up some clayton points by association.
I don’t desire to be remembered for anything other than bringing up a responsible bunch of replacements and keeping the madam happy as per the church organised negotiation some 27 years ago.
Though Bryla, I’d wait a few years and get a second opinion on those self appraised assesments. They seem to have been created in front of a mirror consumed by your not less than meagre self.
Please look after yourself. I’ve got several million drachma riding on President Obama with Daddy Dave.
