  1. The United States’ 1.5million service personnel and Guantanamo’s 3,000 construction workers are eligible to visit the “resort”, which boasts a McDonald’s, KFC and a bowling alley.


    They even have a Wal-Mart supermarket.

    From the article. Maybe “boasts” is the wrong word when describing the presence of a McDonalds or a Wal-Mart. A simple “has” will suffice.

  3. Hey, what say we take up a collection to send Hicks to the Gitmo resort?  I’m sure that DoD would be glad to see him back again.

    On a related note…..the various military departments operate several such military resorts world wide.  They offer inexpensive vacation spots for military personnel and their families.  They’ve been around for years.  A classic location:  The Hale Koa Hotel, on Waikiki Beach, in Hawaii. 

    Gitmo? Just another choice, is all.  The gift shop is merely an added and inspired touch.

(Warning: pun approaching) I found the complaint of the hunger-strikers being force fed through unwashed, unlubricated nasogastric tubes particularly hard to swallow.

    I think the only humane thing to do with the Gitmo detainees is to line them up against a wall and shoot them. It’s according to the Geneva convention, after all.

  9. Guantanamo Bay base was there long before the Taliban showed up, and chances are, the resort was too.  Years ago my family and I stayed in the Army resort at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, south of Munich, and we didn’t feel at all ghoulish by being in one of Hitler’s favorite holiday spots.

  12. Interesting that the climate in which the “enemy combatants lie sweltering” is one that “American sunseekers” go to to “laze in the Caribbean sunshine”. Don’t “human rights activists” read what the write before they publish? Maybe they don’t need to.

    Of course mine was in ‘42 and dear old Dad’s in ‘10.  He’s probably in a grave spinning mode and I’m forced to tell my mates, no more August 7 celebrating.
    Of course, Neanderthals (“now a different species, go Darwin”) we are, my mates and I will now celebrate the intergum (sp?)between Hiroshima, 8/6, and Nagasaki, 8/9.

Re #20, Michael, Gitmo is a pure military base, run by the Navy.  You’d have to be in the military, or have military benefits (e.g., a military retiree) to use the “resort”, or maybe go with someone with such benefits.  I recall that one of my uncles (retired Navy) spent a vacation there, once upon a time.

    Still, if you’re interested, check it out.  It ain’t the Holy Kaola (h/t to KevGillet), but looks decent enough, for an Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) facility.
