HE SHOOTS, HE SCORES

Soccer enthusiasm is deadly:

Thai police are searching for a gunman who shot and killed two soccer fans at a beach resort after complaining they were cheering too loud during a broadcast of Italy’s World Cup opener against Ghana, officials said Wednesday.

The two men, both Thais, were watching Italy’s 2-0 win over Ghana at a restaurant Monday at the Thai beach resort town of Pattaya, and erupted in roars when Italy scored its first goal, said Panipha Wattakul, a girlfriend of one of the victims.

World Cup fan photographs (not of the shootings) here.

UPDATE. Here’s how the game should be played:

  1. But if the score was 2-0 I don’t see how a Thai entered into it.

  2. #1: I don’t see it either. I believe it was actually a kos-type victory for Ghana (they only lost by 2).

  3. I remember clearly watching the 1986 semi-final between Germany and France in Vienna in the hotel TV room.  I decided to cheer for Germany for that match sitting amongst guests.  When Germany won, a Frenchman abused me loudly in his language.  I didn’t understand what he was saying other than he was a tad upset.  Prick.  Apart from that, what I loved being in Europe at the time was the passion the locals had for soccer.  I loved watching the games outside on TV in the Squares, drinking lots of beer and soaking up the atmosphere.  I can imagine the atmosphere in Europe at the moment.

  4. All I know about European soccer is a memory I have of standing in the Marienplatz with my family one day when a gang of English soccer fans went by, singing very loudly, brandishing blue wool scarves around their necks, and shoving pedestrians out of the way.  We went into a shop and hid until they were gone.

  5. Soccer might actually be the first real evidence of interference in the affairs of humans by aliens “from outer space”... and possibly mind control beams from orbiting satellites.

Nothing else can really explain how soccer has spread so virulently.

  6. The virulence is spreading in the US after years of putting 5 years olds on the soccer fields and not letting them off until they have graduated from high-school.

  7. How can you possibly fire a gun with just your feet?

Because, you know ... it’s about soccer and all.

    I need a drink.

  8. After 9/11, a tv was put in our elevator lobby.  It’s turned to CNN or FOXnews (taking turns).

Well.  Somebody tuned it to whatever’s showing the soccer.  I was astounded that such a crowd had gathered in our lobby…

  9. The ambulance in the background seemed to be a necessity ... is the driver leaning on the bonnet? ... an old Ford F series ambo?
