HAIL SANTIAGO

Click through this series of viewpoints on the UN until you reach Santiago Pangan, local recycler and instant legend.

  1. Viva Santiago!  Why is it the people who clear up the trash have a clearer understanding of how the world works, than the cocktail-and-canape crowd?  I’m also worried about that guy who apparently works a 12-hour day in the UN cafeteria.  No freedom fries for him!

  2. Forget Kofi, a Santiago run UN would make sure that plastic bottles were collected all over the world… Which is more constructive than any current UN program.

  3. And can someone please tell Annika Soder (no.7) to lighten up!

  4. Move the UN to France or Belgium?  That’s a toughie.  The French deserve it, and I am reasonably confident that French farmers would blockade it 24/7.  However, having both the EEC bueracracy and the UN in Belgium could trigger a minor war.  What fun.

  6. This reminds me of the comedian (his name escapes me) who lamented the fact that the only people who knew how to run the country properly were all too busy cutting hair and driving taxis.

  7. Onya Santiago - I’d vote for him any day.  And he’d probably make much more sense than most other UN members.

  8. She has UN written all over her. UN as in United Nations and UN as in UNappealing.

And get a load of Shiek Pomade, who is worried about “definitions” of terrorism. He looks like he was sent over from Central Casting to appear in an episode of Miami Vice.

  10. Speaking of Annika Söder, what a classic clueless quote:

“If you look at the length of the text in the outcome document, development is very important.”

  13. From Anna (#8, Mr. Magoo, #7 made my eyes bleed):

...but only two or three countries have brought reports on how they’re doing.

Anna is indeed a honey, but I’m boggled that she can’t follow the news, and figure it out for herself.  Mentally, Anna is following in the path of Annika.  I just hope she takes better care of herself.

  16. I have to say that is the funniest goddamn thing I have seen all year.

As for Annika, she looks exactly as I would expect for someone who has just been to a UN summit.

As for Anna (8) maybe she is actually in the Dominican Republic rather than the UN I can’t believe that someone could look that good and that happy and be at the UN.

  18. O/T

Courtesy Powerline a site worth visiting from time to time: Eye on the UN.

From the site a factoid worth keeping in mind when discussing the UN:
    * Number of UN member states that are full-fledged democracies or “fully free” according to Freedom House: 88.
    * Number of UN member states: 191.
    * Thefore % of UN member states which are full-fledged democracies: 46%.

Really, it’s time for the Western democracies to pick up their collective balls and go home. The civilised world is getting nowhere in this cabal of dictators. We need a body comprised only of democracies. True, this will include France and Germany but the flea-bitten Middle East and most of Africa will be out.

  22. My father was in the trash business, and as a garbage magnate (that’s magNATE, folks), he did indeed learn a lot about people. Santiago’s got that down-to-earth, realistic world view that can’t be grasped by the high panjandrums whose view of the world is from the proverbial 30,000 feet. And, er, no offense, but I’d be rather nervous sharing Majdin’s view at that height.

“This - is the flag,it is the first test for those of us who believe that men and women are EQUAL and women have a right to speak and respond.
Who are the people in this place who will deny us.Who will not alleviate DEATH,DISEASE,AIDS,H.I.V. BRING ON THE FIGHT!”
Addressing the human rights commission? Speaking about a funamentalist religious state? Addressing a women’s health conference on the international stage? Nope, dressing down the Australian government and senator ron boswell….....

And note that the one they choose for the against view is a mere scavenger, an uneducated peon who can’t hope to grasp the complexity and sophistication of international affairs…

Ashleigh youngish, calm and composed, cheerful, smiling, attractively and neatly attired and looking very professional…
sbs presenter Le len Chen however -elderly,dress usually cobbled together with safety pins, garishly made up and hair usually standing on end, expression surly, peevish, outright hostile or disturbingly triumphantly smug.Voice of a sergeant major, pitched low and growling.Looks like a superannuated actor from the Pram Factory Radical Collective.Lift your game sbs,the public expects better.

  33. For all of you non-Americans out there who may not understand, Santiago is most likely homless. The “local recycler” epithet is high euphemism. The fact that he has the most sense of anyone presented by the BBC in that piece is quite sad, but not surprising.

Someone (Fox News perhaps?) give that man a job!

  35. France?  Belgium?!  Mark Steyn suggested moving the UN to Dar Es Salaam.  Think of other cities you would like to see UN diplomats live in.  Khartoum?  Lagos?  Oh, there are so many more appropriate lacations for the UN than Belgium.

  40. How about we move the UN to Tehran?

Or Gaza? Now that the Palestinians have it back in their paws, and with the obscene amount of aid they receive, surely they could find somewhere to stash a few thousand parasites delegates and associates.

  41. I thought Thibay was a looker.  You’re right though, Santiago is the only one who doesn’t live on a planet with a pink sky.

And they didn’t even show the face of the poor schlub who works in the UN cafeteria.  This is an outrageous affront to the working class.  Hell, he’s probably the only one at the UN who is working.
