GREAT INDOOR FIGHT LATEST
Editor & Publisher could use some editing before publishing:
Glenn Milne, a columnist for News Ltd. marched onstage during the Walkey Awards just as Stephen Mayne, who writes for media criticism for the Web site crikey.com.au, was accepting an award for best Photographic Essay.
Mayne was in fact presenting a prize for the best business news report. A better piece on the Thriller Involving Glenn Milne-er here. By the way, anyone see Mayne last night on A Current Affair? He was limping like Douglas Bader.
AHA! You watch A Current Affair!
Gonna see if I can find that Mayne interview.
And Douglas Bader - legend. I was thrilled to see on TV the other week the story of new bionic limbs. A lady had the nerves which normally supply her arm attached to her pectoralis major muscle, to which the prosthesis was then connected. She could move the arm through all joints (except maybe fine motor work with fingers, I don’t recall them saying, but she could safely pick up a cup), all just by thinking it as we do. With any luck, the refinements over the next 20-30 years will yield ever more amazing possibilities.
Ah ... Tin Legs Bader ... I learnt about him at school, very inspiring ... I don’t think the children these days have him as part of the curriculum ... a friend was marking for the History subject of the Year 10 NSW School Certificate exams the last 3 weeks ... he said the revisionism of history by the students was profound. Just as disturbing was the question which asked about commenting on a post WW2 decade ... many wrote about pre-WW2.
BTW ... you must’ve noticed that the NSW Education Minister Carmel Tebbutt didn’t know what Australia Day represents. She has been taught revisionist history.
Going off on a tangent here.
Maybe it’s just me, but I find this rush to apologise nauseating. I mean among public figures who get caught out generally. Not just Milne, although he is fairly typical - ‘Alcohol, medication… I’ve deeply embarrassed both myself and people dear to me...’ Right. You’ve only just discovered that booze and tablets are a bad combination. And you’ve been old enough to vote for, umm, how long?
There’s no sincerity in these public grovelings. It’s all about getting in front of the cameras, reading a speech that takes about five minutes to slap together, and that’s it, I’ve proven I’m really a good person at heart. Is there any such thing any more as the private but heartfelt apology? Alternatively, instead of all this tugging of the forelock, why not stand your ground? I think Milne would have earned more respect if he’d said afterwards ‘I hate Stephen Mayne’s guts. And next time the prick gets within arm’s reach I’ll be in shape to make the most of the opportunity.’
It would have guaranteed a monster audience for next year’s Walkleys, too.Posted by SwinishCapitalist on 2006 12 02 at 10:02 AM • permalinkI enjoyed something of a crikeylanche earlier this year, for this post at my place: American Islamic Leaders Warn Of Anti-Muslim Backlash Following Next Month’s Nuking Of Tel Aviv . So for that reason, in addition to being a foreigner and not really knowing why I should execrate them, I can’t bear them hard.

But all they will say is, “I would like to apologise if anyone was offended by my behaviour...” In other words, they’re not apologising. The focus is back on the person who was insulted - if they were offended. And it’s not the offender who is offensive but his behaviour.
Milne explains his reasons here:
Apparently Mayne spread rumours about Milne, his wife and other people. I believe Milne also spoke about it on Insiders this morning.

displaying no sense of irony, maynes mum describes the australian’s reports as distorted unfair and nasty, unlike crikey presumably.
When was the last time anyone in australian public life had to get his mummy to stand up for him- what a man
Posted by eeniemeenie on 2006 12 03 at 08:30 PM • permalinki’d never heard of him before but man what a legend - a true hero- bader, not that big girls blouse mayne- i’m not sure the mayne should be mentioned in the same sentence let alone compared to him in any way
