GLOBAL SCAMMING
New Zealand aggressively supported the Kyoto Protocol. Now the bill is due:
Taxpayers will be at least $1 billion worse off under revised Government estimates of the costs of the Kyoto treaty to combat global warming.
National’s environment spokesman, Nick Smith, says the party, if elected, will consider pulling out of the Kyoto Protocol, despite the cost to New Zealand’s international reputation, given the “hammering” the economy will take under the latest numbers.
New Zealand had earlier anticipated a $500 million windfall by coming in below its pollution target. Instead, emissions have increased. Same thing is happening across much of Europe:
Here are some IEA estimates of the increases: France, 6.9 percent; Italy, 8.3 percent; Greece, 28.2 percent; Ireland, 40.3 percent; the Netherlands, 13.2 percent; Portugal, 59 percent; Spain, 46.9 percent. It’s true that Germany (down 13.3 percent) and Britain (a 5.5 percent decline) have made big reductions. But their cuts had nothing to do with Kyoto. After reunification in 1990, Germany closed many inefficient coal-fired plants in eastern Germany; that was a huge one-time saving. In Britain, the government had earlier decided to shift electric utilities from coal (high CO2 emissions) to plentiful natural gas (lower CO2 emissions).
On their present courses, many European countries will miss their Kyoto targets for 2008-2012. To reduce emissions significantly, Europeans would have to suppress driving and electricity use; that would depress economic growth and fan popular discontent. It won’t happen.

A lot of politicians were persuaded that something had to be done by Mann’s Hockey Stick graph of global temperature over the last millennium that featured prominently in the last IPCC report, and which banished the medieval warm period and subsequent mini-ice age with some poorly used inappropriate linear mathematics and excessive attention to the growth spurt of North American bristlecone pines.
Now that questions are being asked in important places about how such research should have been so critically accepted by the IPCC, expect sceptical politicians to become more vociferous.

Of COURSE they can cut down on electricity use and driving. The Bureaucrats of Brussels will never miss a minute’s light or their EU-supplied cars. It’s the rest of you gross, wasteful proles who have to clean up YOUR acts.
Thank god Day Laborer in Chief Carter immunized us against that attitude.

It has at, its core, one thing and one thing only-a massive transfer of wealth out of the Dead White European Male Culture and into the third world. The green movement is anti-capitalist at its core and sees the west(read USA) as the evil in the world. Their real aim is to eradicate the capitalist west-period. Go through all of the stupid graphs and charts if you want but the aim is still to defund the west.
Back in 1998 Science (link) reported that the US/Canada sinks a good deal more CO2 than it sources (perhaps because the amount of forests and high-efficiency mega agribusiness that consume CO2 track individual wealth and productivity).
What’s also amusing is that the measurement of the amount consumed has far more significant digits than any global warming measurement to date. i.e. percents, not small fractions of a percent.
If the Kyoto folks want to know where to send the check, they can use my address.

They hoped to make a killing selling credits becuase of the closure of their foul ineffecient industrial organisations. And because the EU supports them now for WTO membership. But it seems that rather than sell they have somehow got themselves into a situation where they will have to buy credits if they want to meet their agreement. How sad.
So I guess they along with Italy will be pulling out in 2012.
And China says it will do as the EU etc do rather than what they say. All going very well.The whole purpose of Kyoto was to destroy the economies of the developed nations, particularly the US. Actually it was to designed to redistribute wealth from the developed world to the third world.
However, once again it shows that the Left was, is and remains not only economically, but scientifically cluless.
I wonder it Greeny season has opened yet?
No. I say we hold New Zealand to its word. After all, they’re such a principled country compared to the eeeeeevil USA.

The US isn’t taking this bait, sorry. If you really want to reduce pollution, talk to China, Brazil and India first.
I read last week that the NZ government is still planning to tax farmers for the methane emissions of their livestock in spite of the fact that it will lead to significant costs. Only in NZ…

The whole thing was a scam by the Euroweenies to not only put a ball and chain around the yanks, but also to buy off the more militant green groups in Europe.
Notice how kyoto was structure:
(1) 1990 was chosen as a base year (not when it is ratified), becuase that was when all those nasty, polluting factories and power plants in eastern Europe were shutting down, and Britain was getting out of the coal industry in Wales (result - easier to meet target for europe);
(2) set up Europe as one entity (the europe umbrella)so that euro countries that have increasing emissions can can be offset by the eastern european decline in emmissions);
(3) resist all attempts for other groups of countries to set up a similar umbrella.
(4) ensure that there was no requirements for developing counties to meet targets (so industry has an incentive to transfer to them from Amerikkka and the Australianazis, putting negative pressure on les anglo-saxon economies).Of course, like most grand plans of the Euroweenies, they couldn’t stick to the script themselves. And of course, Clinton, Bush and Howard are not stupid.

They were obsessed with the USA and Australia. Of course they are morally superior to convict-ogre Australians and cowboy Yanks. Student politics have taken over the government and student press the media.

The wholesale, uncrticial import of Euro-green mantra into our own green movement was illustrated to me a few years ago when extending my house. Our clean, green designer, when discussing options for tiling, said to the effect that we might not want italian tiles as these had to be transported long distances and contributed to greenhouse emissions etc. Great, i thought, we live in one of the most isolated countries from developed markets and these guys want to restrict trade based on transport distances. Of course this works beautifully for EU countries which primarily trade amongst themselves and love to discourage imports from the far reaches of the earth but for Australia? Goodbye living standards. The sound of giggling euros could be faintly heard.

You can cut down a lot on transportation emissions by using identity theft instead. It’s a sort of poor-man’s teleportation.
