GEORGE SWIMS

Anti-flying womble George Monbiot bragged last month that he hadn’t flown for a year, and demanded similar austerity of his green colleagues:

If even the leaders of the green movement are not prepared to live without flying for pleasure then how can we expect that of other people?

Monbiot turned up in Vancouver a week or so back to promote his new book. I wonder how he got there.

  2. BTW, the Pacific Northwest, especially along the coast and in the Cascades (not to mention the Olympics), has been hit by major snow and rain storms, high winds, and other such weather patterns over the past few days.  Some places had near or new record precipitation (snow or rain, take your pick).

Does this mean Monbiot wield Algore-like powers over the weather?  Or did Algore pass through the region again?

  3. He lashed together the bodies of drowned polar blairs of course.

Polar Arctic Canoe Organisation sell them I believe.

Why do i get a flashback to the old “hitchikers guide to the galaxy” where there was a paradise vacation planet but whenever you left you had bits surgicly removed to offset any weight gain.

  7. He obviously wasn’t travelling for pleasure. Perhaps he was travelling to cause others pain.

  9. Flying uses up earth’s precious resources of altitude, causing incremental man-made sky-lowering.

  11. I thought that when all the air traffic was grounded after September 11, they found that planes were actually having a positive effect on the environment - possibly something to do with keeping the temperature down because the gases reflected something or other.

Does anybody know what I’m talking about? I got the feeling from reading the article that air travel was basically a good thing.

  12. Never mind the plane, he published a book! Pray tell how that was done without Gaia’s bounty?

Maybe it was written on vellum by monks?

  16. “tuna fishers’ nets”

Too right, richard mcenroe - not horrible, sexist fishermen, but enlightened, non-sexist fishers! You have learned your lesson well. The Canadian gov’t has spent millions trying to encourage this sort of mental evolution.

Now, off - into the bright dawn of inclusive, socialist utopia!

On the wings of angels, of course.  Isn’t that how all Gaia’s Saviors travel?
