Maureen Dowd - the flounder of 43rd street - on Democrat gnawing:
The lioness of Chappaqua is hot on the trail of the Chicago gazelle, eager to gnaw him to pieces, like a harrowing scene out of a George Stubbs painting.
Perhaps Ms Dowd wasn’t thinking of this George Stubbs painting, although faint campaign overtones may be read into it:
Word on the street is you can’t even be satisfyin’ your man, bitch
What does an urbanite like MoDo know about George Stubbs? Likely nothing save he painted outdoorsy stuff. Ergo, it must have been violent and bloody.
Sad how people in cities cling to such misconceptions about rural life and nature. Must be because they’re so bitter.
And who can blame them?

Posted by wronwright on 2008 05 04 at 02:58 PM • permalinkAs a sometime horse painter, I am a big fan of George Stubbs. You could see his deep knowledge and affection in every portrait, which makes the horror of Lion Devouring a Horse even more vivid.
Unlike the Delacroix image linked above, violence isn’t typical of Stubbs. But sadly, MoDo is technically right.
Wot Lyle said. “Lion devouring a horse” was a subject Stubbs returned to a number of timees. Modo presumably saw the Frick Collection exhibition - I was lucky enough to see it too in the American winter of 2007, on holiday - that featured a number of Stubbs’ paintings, including the one linked by Lyle, above. Link.
The next scene: dog bites horse, horse kicks dog? Which is which? Hillbilly or O-man?

She will, at some point in the future, be writing a chapter in a research paper titled, “Reactions to Aesthetic-Political Conceptual Dissonance Amongst Earthlings.”
