FOR EMAIL BEFORE HE WAS AGAINST IT

Robert Fisk earlier this month:

I don’t waste my time with blogs, I don’t use the Internet, and I don’t use e-mail. I work.

And Robert Fisk in 2003:

“I was giving a talk last December to a very large group of British Jews ... and I said, ‘I’m on your side—let’s fight anti-Semitism together, but don’t start libeling me,’ ‘’ Fisk says. “If you stand up to people, they’ll respect you for it. I had an e-mail from a Cambridge University American law student, and he said, ‘You are an evil f—man, ’ so I called him up—he put his telephone number on it.”

  1. Gosh.

A progressive journalist with no concept of the truth… and no idea that nothing said in public is hidden anymore.

    I’m shocked.  You?

  2. Let’s be fair: Robert is an important man, and like many important men he probably has a secretary who receives his email, laboriously prints it out, and puts it on his desk. If required he scribbles notes on it, and the secretary collects it and retypes it for sending.

So in this scenario Robert doesn’t, technically, use email. His secretary does. The great man keeps himself untainted by such base and vulgar concerns, and pays an underling a pittance to be grubbied by it.

Isn’t it funny how the Gourmet Left is often indistinguishable from classical capitalist autocracy?

  3. As it is with his fellow travelers on the loony Left, the Truth is whatever he feels at the moment. Inconvenient facts like this are instruments of repression.

Yes, Tim, you are repressing the Truth Tellers.

A-ha! Now we see the violence inherent in the system!

  5. He’s not an idiot. A man who defends Saddam, Milosevic, and the Rwanda murderers isn’t an idiot. He’s evil.

    Carter is an idiot.

Yeah, but he subcontracts the bold-tagging to the Webdiary crew.

  9. Fisk has no problem with being a liar.  He says Osama Bin Laden lied about Australia being a target because of East Timor.  So he knows when somebody is a liar and when they aren’t - just ask him.

Paper!! what do you think this is the 18th century.
Much more likely she chisels it manualy into cruciform hyrogliphics onto small baked clay tablets.

  11. Reminds me of the time I was standing outside the Sphincter Hotel in Jalalabad with its manicured lawns and pink roses ....

Fisk is a bit like McGaeiough in that tendency to want to write a travelogue.

Apparently nowadays you dont need to use a flash when photographing the Iranian President.
    That glow is probably radioactive.

  13. OT, apparently* this moveon commercial about US soldiers “stuck in Iraq for thanksgiving” shows pics of British soldiers:

    more lies

(*I haven’t been able to validate this since I’m at work)

  14. Art, thanks to richard mcenroe linking from Jeff Goldstein’s blog to OpinionJournal linking to MoveOn.org, yes, that’s exactly what happened.

MoveOn is trying to hit the emotional button during the holidays by whining about the troops not being home.  Too bad those dweebs don’t know what uniforms those soldiers they care so much about wear.  Must be all that emoting.

Your link requires QuickTime to see the TV ad; the OpinionJournal for 29 November 2005 has a photo capture of the Brits (who are clearly in British, not American, uniforms).  Or you can go to the MoveOn bleg for funds to put the ad on TV; there are other captures there as well.

I don’t recommend donating, though, unless you can send them Monopoly money.

  15. #13 Art - yep, you’re right on this. Definitely British camouflage uniforms.

    This is British.

    And this is American.

And this is Australian (desert pattern).

  18. Because no one does things differently than they did 3 years ago.

Because no one has ever used email and then decided the benefits aren’t worth the cost.

Just ignore those technical illiterates like Knuth.

  19. Because pompous asses who make windy statements like “I don’t use the Internet, and I don’t use e-mail. I work.” deserve the extra yard of scrutiny. Because men whose relationship to the “truth” has been shown in the past to be arbitrary shouldn’t be in a business where some concept of “truth” is appreciated. Because Fisk is a bloviating dink who’ll say anything for effect, and it’s useful to enumerate those occasions.
