FILTHY OLD CARS WILL SAVE US ALL

Ever wondered how to reconcile apparently contradictory statements in the Koran? Bilal Abu Aisha has the answer:

The Prophet ordered naming newborns on the seventh day. That is as soon as they were born. Allah’s Messenger said: “Every child is mortgaged with its Aqeeqah, which is to be slaughtered for it on its seventh day. On that day, it should also be named, and its head should be shaved.” On the other hand the Prophet said: “A baby boy was born for me this past night. So I named him with my (great grand) father’s name, Ibrahim.” The best way to reconcile between the Prophet’s statements is by allowing both of them to hold simultaneously.
Sorted. The Green faith, popular in the west, may have to adopt a similar stance. Next Monday the ABC will broadcast a BBC program on the horror of global dimming, allegedly responsible for “many thousands of deaths through drought and famine”:

Global dimming is a product of the fossil fuels that cause global warming. It is the result of tiny airborne pieces of soot, ash and sulphur compounds reflecting back the heat of the sun.

By allowing less sunlight to reach the Earth, global dimming is cushioning us from the full impact of global warming, climatologists say. They fear that as we burn coal and oil more cleanly, and dimming is reduced, the full effects of global warming will be unleashed.

Torch that Prius! Ban catalytic converters! The dimming must be maintained!
The overriding concern expressed by climate scientists in this program is that our climate will be radically altered, rendering many parts of the planet uninhabitable - unless concerted action is taken to combat both global dimming and global warming.
But combating global dimming will only expose us to the even greater threat of global warming. Never mind; as Bilal reminds us, “The best way to reconcile between the Prophet’s statements is by allowing both of them to hold simultaneously.” (Incidentally, most of our planet is already uninhabitable; we call these areas “oceans”.) Green is a religion, of course. Look what happens when ecological holy objects are threatened:

For the past four weeks, a group of protestors has been camped outside the General Motors facility in Burbank. They’re not upset about labor or wages or jobs going off shore, although they certainly could be. No, these people are irate because GM is about to destroy many of the last of the EV 1 electric cars that it built in the 1990s.

GM made one thousand of the clean ‘green’ cars, but leased most of them. Last August, when those leases were up, GM took back the cars. Since then, according to the protestors, GM has been crushing the cars in Mesa, Arizona.

Because nobody wants them. It’s just as well for global dimming that these anti-dim machines are meeting the crusher; greens should applaud, and demand the continued manufacture of Iran’s dim-friendly Paykan:

You may be able to smell Iran’s boxy national car five minutes before it rattles into view, but the imminent end of its production line has stirred mixed emotions.

The square-cut and gas-guzzling Paykan, Persian for arrowhead, is familiar to Britons because its design is the same as the Hillman Hunter car of the 1960s and 1970s. Many of the Paykans spluttering through the tides of Tehran traffic are well over 30 years old.

They will save us from the warming. Hail Paykan, blocker of the sun!

  2. How about “God is omniscient” and “Man has free will.”

This latest global warming theory is awesome. Brilliant deconstruction, Tim. So, so far, we have:

Pollution is blotting out the sun and causing another Ice Age; pollution is trapping greenhouse gases and causing catastrophic warming; pollution is doing something-or-other that is causing global warming which is somehow-or-other leading to another Ice Age; and now, pollution-caused cooling and warming are happening simultaneously and are in equilibrium, which is somehow bad. Got it.

Reminds me of a conversation I had with my Catechism teacher:

“If the bread and wine are tranformed into the body and blood of Christ, how come they don’t taste like it?”

    “That’s part of the miracle.”

  6. Global Dumbing would accuratly summarise the last 10-15 years of BBC “factual” programming.

I watched an old BBC documentary on the Falklands war and it was excellent, I watched a recent BBC mockumentary on disease and it had a graphic showing DNA with 3 strands!

The BBC is 2.8 BILLION pounds a year of propaganda, maybe Oz and the US should slap tarrifs on programs produced by forced labour?

I believe the EPA once carried water vapor as a “pollutant” on its site, that is, until Bush=Hitler came in with plans to kill all the Infidels, including himself. Sound familiar? Islamofascists transposed to be Bush.

But, my Morons: “You hurt the ones that I love best, and cover up the truth with lies. One day you’ll be in the ditch, flies buzzing around your eyes, blood on your saddle.” Idiot wind....

Morons instead become Islamofascists, sadomasochists, some real problems.

  10. The unfalsifiability of the Global Warming theory is beginning to trouble distinguished climate scientists like Hans von Storch

The media are now claiming that all kinds of extreme events are increasing in frequency. Using this logic, a drought in the German state of Brandenburg fits together seamlessly with a catastrophic flood of the Oder River and the two events don’t contradict each other.

The whole article is well worth reading.

Posted by rexie on 03/17 at 12:11 PM • #

  11. Ow - I had to read that twice to be sure it wasn’t a put-on.  So the extent of the possible catastrophe of global warming may be mitigated by the benefits of global dimming, which have common root causes?  Where’s my aspirin?

Reminds me of this article from JunkScience about the problems greens are having: “the apparently cooling stratosphere is masking observation of anticipated warming in the troposphere.” Except that the stratosphere is warming… resulting in the question “How long, do you suppose, before they come up with the old shell game: stratospheric cooling being masked by tropospheric warming?”

One other thing - according to an interview on Canada’s CBC Radio (like the BBC, but not as conservative) those EV 1 protesters have offered to buy all the remaining cars to the tune of $25000 each.  They may be loopy, but at least they’re willing to put their money where their mouths are.

  15. I think I’ve got it figured out.

    1. Driving cars causes catastrophic global cooling due to sunlight being reflected by the atmosphere.

    2. Driving cars causes catastrophic global warming due to increased CO2 in the atmosphere.

Ergo, we are suffering from catastrophic global temperature stasis. Something must be done!

    Posted by on 03/17 at 01:18 PM • #

  16. You’re not quite right about the EV1, Tim.

Those protestors are begging GM to sell them the cars rather than simply crush them and sell them for scrap. (They have even supposedly said they’re quite fine with GM giving up all support and parts supply, too - they just want to buy the cars, damn it.)

GM’s reticence is puzzling, given especially the latter point.

  17. There used to be a similar car produced in Kenya. It was mostly an obsolete British model, but the engine was from Peugeot tooling in order to achieve the mandated level of local content.

There are also a few running around England with late model injected four valve motors, but that’s a whole nother story.

  18. Let me follow this brilliancy prize, step by step:

    1. global dimming prevents global warming
    2. global dimming is caused by impurities in fossil fuel
    3. global warming is cause by fossil fuel itself
    4. less fuel, and fewer impurities in that fuel, is therefore bad.

So should we resume incinerating our trash to save the Earth?

Only a Green could theorize that increased efficiency is BAD.  No wonder they all drive limos and helicopters.

I lived two and a half years in Yuma, Arizona.  If people can live there they can live anywhere.

As for GM’s decision to scrap the cars instead of sell them, I read that since they won’t be making spare parts for them anymore they are concerned with worn out parts creating a liability issue in the event of an accident.

Well of course not...it hadn’t been invented yet.

Greens really regard themselves (and all humans I guess) as something near to Gods.

In their view, we are able to have a greater impact on our surroundings than those puny volcanoes, insignificant oceans, and the Sun itself.

All this to satisfy our selfish desire for mobility and cheeseburgers.

  25. Sigivald — I believe US car manufacturers are required by law to keep spare parts and servicing available for their models for a number of years.  So they would be required to do so for a line of cars that was not a success, that is not going to be manufactured in the future, and was basically coerced out of them by a single state’s green laws.  Not a whole lot of incentive there.

  27. Mr. Blair, you skirt a fine line between humour and bad taste.  I suspect that the later is more applicable.

Clearly in a secular society, it is important that all religions are ridiculed equally.

Islam and the “green” religion must be close to your heart, I therefore would like to offer you another view.

Perhaps the Duality of the Theocrasy of the United States can be similarly reconciled?

Perhaps Moses’ victory over King Og, can be likened to “the war on terror” as told in Deuteronomy

1 Then we turned and went by the way of Basan: and Og the king of Basan came out to meet us with his people to fight in Edrai. 2 And the Lord said to me: Fear him not: because he is delivered into thy hand, with all his people and his land: and thou shalt do to him as thou hast done to Sehon king of the Amorrhites, that dwelt in Hesebon. 3 So the Lord our God delivered into our hands, Og also the king of Basan, and all his people: and we utterly destroyed them, 4 Wasting all his cities at one time, there was not a town that escaped us: sixty cities, all the country of Argob the kingdom of Og in Basan. 5 All the cities were fenced with very high walls, and with gates and bars, besides innumerable towns that had no walls.

6 And we utterly destroyed them, as we had done to Sehon the king of Hesebon, destroying every city, men and women and children: 7 But the cattle and the spoils of the cities we took for our prey. 8 And we took at that time the land out of the hand of the two kings of the Amorrhites, that were beyond the Jordan: from the torrent Amen unto the mount Hermon, 9 Which the Sidonians call Sarion, and the Amorrhites Sanir: 10 All the cities that are situate in the plain, and all the land of Galaad and Basan as far as Selcha and Edrai, cities of the kingdom of Og in Basan.

Hey, they killed all the women and children but at least they left the oil, sorry I mean cattle.

The “though shalt not kill” commandment can be held simultaneously through a wonderful technique known as “doublethink? I think a prophetic author may have spoken of this last century.

  40. Even when the heathen knows not what they do, they bring forth the word of God.  We are at the end of days.

Beginning with Tokyo on 10 March 1945 Moses, reincarnated as Curtis LeMay, smote 67 Japanese cities with fire.  Incendiary bombing from B29s destroyed 51% of Tokyo, taking the lives of 100,000 civilian men, women and children in the course of a single night.

Over the next 5 months, LeMoses went on to smite 66 more Japanese cities with God’s fire, killing millions of civilians.

Commo Lefties such as Robert S. McNamara (then a military statistician in Le Moses’ command, later CEO of Ford Motor Company, Secretary of Defence under Kennedy and Johnson, CEO of the World Bank etc) names LeMoses and himself a war criminal in the 2003 documentary “Fog of War?.

Which just shows how little these “liberals? understand of God’s plan for humanity.

These are the end times.  With the resurrection of militant Israel, and amid a sea of fire, Jesus will return for Armageddon.  True believers will be called up to heaven, and all else will be destroyed in God’s righteous fire.

When Mushtaq_Omar says that all religions need equal ridicule, he consigns himself to the fiery pits.

My point is that your analogy with Deuteronomy is bollocks.  If the West wanted to destroy the Muslim world, we would have done it many times over by now.  Nothing would have stopped us, least of all your imaginary friend Allah.  It’s only because the Western democratic tradition is to execute a war of annhilation as the last resort that Mecca and Medina aren’t two sheets of glass.

Are you suggesting that because I opposed the US occupation of Iraq, that I am a terrorist?

Nobody (including yourself) has previously mentioned the fact that you were or weren’t supportive of the continuation of the Iraqi Ba’athist regime.

Get one thing straight butt-boy:  Just because YOU don’t like something I say, doesn’t give YOU the right to attempt to censor me.  Just because YOU belong to a religion which teaches that its adherents are somehow superior to infidels and atheists (like me), does not make it so, nor entitle you to any special treatement within our society.

If you are “Jewish” are you being identified as being religiously different to a “Christian”, or “Muslim” or “Bhuddist”?

Or are you being identified as an ethnic group - (or sub-group) as Semetic, Caucasian, etc.

Or are you being identified nationally - American, Canadian, or Australian?

  70. ‘global warming’ vs. ‘pollution winter’

Sounds like the plot of Fallen Angels

  71. Please don’t judge us by the minority.

This seems to me a reasonable request.  It’s possible to argue how to determine the minority, but could that please be done on another thread so we can carry on with the business of mocking environuts on this one?

  72. I guess my Ford F150 pickup truck must be negative on the environment, since it has all that anti-pollution crap.

  73. I want to do my part to save the planet. Is there such a thing as a Trabant SUV?

  74. It’s great news for Gore if the planet can perish from global warming and global cooling at the same time. Now he doesn’t have to worry about being contradicted by that giant glacier that keeps growing.

  75. Your comments are most upsetting to myself and family.

Neither you nor I mentioned your family.  You seem to have a problem with containing the argument to the facts and matters at hand.

    We are peaceful people.

Who?  Muslims?  Evidence?  There is violent conflict at every cultural fault-line on the planet which is shared by a large Muslim community - Israel/Palestine, Lebanon, Kashmir, Sudan, Chad, Nigeria, the Caucasus, Western China, Aceh, Timor and Thailand.  It doesn’t seem to matter where they are or who they are living beside - Hindu, Jew, Sikh, Christian, Buddhist - Muslims seem for some reason to get their tits in a tangle with their neighbours.

Face it pal - your religion is violent and breeds violence because it was founded on violence and supremacy.  It treats other beliefs and religions with utter contempt.

    Please look into your heart

Sorry, my brain will do for now.

and realise that a majority of Muslims are appalled by fundamentalism and violence.

What kind of fundamentalism and violence would that be?  The sort of stuff orchestrated by your brothers in the Umma which involves slaughtering 4 year old girls hiding under their beds? Or is it the type that is the figment of your medieval imaginations?

Please don’t judge us by the minority.

    Is that a pretty please?

Remember that there are over a billion of us.

    Don’t worry, I know.

My question is this:  what have YOU done lately to counteract Muslim terrorism?

  76. It’s the fault of all those ‘Greens’-
those tree hugging, vegitarian and vegan lefties have not yet understood it is they who are causing the problems, by emitting too much methane from the colorectal orifice- they will have to tighten up the anal ‘banal’ sphinter from which they emit too much fetid hot air!

  77. What is the DM for a saving throw vs the Ban attack by the dreaded Killer Admin? (Like a Killer DM, except worse.)

  80. Richard: Killer admin. Killer DMs (in this case, Dungeon Master) are from an old April Fool’s issue of Dragon magazine. They at least can be subdued. Killer admins, otoh are immune to that.

(...and it’s DC for the saving throw. This d20 stuff is conflicting with my knowledge of other gaming systems. Difficulty Modifiers (DM) are from Traveller.)

  81. Having seen (most of) the BBC show on 4 Corners, we have found it difficult to read all the above comments and not feel vastly disappointed at most of the commentator’s intolerance, the verbal abuse, the obvious hatred they feel for people who give a damn about the future of this planet. And at the hopelessness of our situation when (seemingly) so many people think the way they (collectively) seem to think.

We see very little evidence of anyone wanting to impartially examine the evidence and come up with an independent assessment of the issues. Rather you all present as a bunch of trained seals, ready to jump on the circus bandwagon on cue as it rolls past.

Just on the specific issue of global dimming, can you not admit the ‘possibility’ that the phenomenon of global dimming, if it exists, may have had an alleviating effect on the phenomenon of global warming, if it exists, and that cleaner methods of burning fossil fuels, while ameliorating particulate air pollution locally, may be contributing to the diminishing of the dimming effect, thus speeding up global warming.

Only a fool would look at the above and say ‘well let’s burn fuel dirtier then’, and to give you all the benefit of the doubt, we’ll allow that you were all ‘just joking’.

Climate science is obviously beyond the scope of the current technology. Predictions of global warming are just that, predictions, and not firm fact, but to react to all and every attempt by scientists to draw our attention to possible future scenarios with scorn, belittlement, and braying bigotries would align one, in a different century, with those who insisted the Sun revolved around the Earth.

Why are you, like your forebears, so violently angry with those who don’t share your ideas? Do you not share a concern for the future habitability of the Earth? It almost seems like you guys would like to promote the environmental degradation of the planet. ‘Bring it on’ you seem to be saying, and bugger the consequences. ‘And if we can get some fun out of kicking those who give a damn along the way, well all the better.’

Perhaps you do not agree with environmentalists about what are the major concerns in the world today, yet can you not accept that they are not, for the most part, motivated by anything other than a concern for the continued existence of humanity on an Earth that can sustain its burden of biota in conditions not much worse, or hopefully even better than, today. Is this evil?

We are sure that most of you share this concern. Some of you have children and, unless there is something really dark in your hearts, we assume that you would like them and their children’s children to continue to be able to experience the delights of the natural world, to breathe relatively clean air, to drink clean water etc. Disagreeing on the modus operandi seems small cheese in comparison to our collective acceptance that we share our fate with the fate of this planet.

But enough of this. Our main concern is not the specific issues that are raised and thrashed around on sites like these, but rather with the tone of debate, which is anything but constructive. On sites (unlike this one) that allow for debate, protagonists from both sides fall so easily into childish abuse that Australia’s parliament looks good in comparison. On this site, of course, the donkeys all came from the same sire. I have a reasonable amount of respect for Mr Blair who can at times be even-handed. We feel certain that he would prefer to have a constructive debate in this forum rather than the current blagging war with which it is afflicted.

  82. Thank God for loadedog. I too am appalled by the tone and quality of the comments about this article. I see almost NO analysis other than fairly puerile gloating and bandwagon-jumping and I’m NOT a global-warming advocate. But I am from a science background. I see little if any science here at all.

What I see is fear. That maybe there is some truth here that will take just a little more braintime than it does to spout the anti-leftist party-line.

I challenge you to attack the facts. The hypothesis that dimming has masked warming is not in itself absurd. What is absurd is the irrational response of many if not most of the writers.

May I suggest that you forego the ad-hominem attacks tempting as they might be and THINK about the facts. And not simply to bolster your own preconceptions but to find the TRUTH.

    Isn’t that what’s important?
