FIGHTING TO THE END

Further evidence—as if any were required at this point—of the left-wing bias at Media Watch. I wonder how many similar “please explain” emails have been sent to Alan Ramsey, Phillip Adams, Traceeee Hutchison, Adele Horin, and other ABC pals? By contrast, if Andrew Bolt or Miranda Devine printed out all their Media Watch emails they could probably wallpaper Adelaide.

  6. Adamski was in timely form, boosting the egregious chum Chris Masters. Highlights:

Adamski did a Lowenstein on the persecution of Masters:  “I’ve never known anyone attacked as much as you, Chris, over a book.”

Adamski distinguished between John Laws and Al Jones. John Laws ‘has always been just a hired voice’, but Jones actually stands up for his beliefs sometimes.

It’s easy to see which of the two Adman Admaski prefers in his hermetically-sealed moral world - A Postmodernist is better than not being a Leftist.

    Dear Bob:

There are some rather unsavory looking characters hanging about the neighborhood lately.  A couple of them knocked on my door just yesterday, inquiring about some sort of bird on the loose.  They are quite the ruffians, all knobby-headed with long, wild hair and dressed in glittery garb, and their speech is so guttural they spit all over me while they talked.  Do you know what kind of bird they are looking for?  And if so, would you kindly direct them, preferably out of the neighborhood?

Only thing worse than a geek is an out of date geek!

In later Trek franchises, the Klingons have cloaking devices coming out their ears! Star Fleet considers cloaking immoral, so when they need to do some immoral cloaking, they borrow a Klingon ship and crew for the task. Whoever coined the term “Democrats in Space” for Star Trek - TNG, was not exaggerating.

  15. Star Fleet considers cloaking immoral

No, no, no.  They don’t consider it immoral.  It became a term in the peace treaty between the Federation and the Romulan Empire that the former would never have the cloaking device.  This gave the Romulans an advantage over the Federation, one that persuaded them to maintain peaceful relations—at least for the time being.

As anyone knows, the Romulan ships unfortunately had the disadvantage of being much slower than Federation ships.  So there was a give and take between the two technologies.

Now the Klingon ships were as fast as the Federation ships but they didn’t have the cloaking device, what with the fact that they’re a race of ridged skull warriors who prefer to fight or rut, not dally around science projects.  So they traded their warp technology and also that of their weaponry to the Romulans in exchange for the cloaking device.

Ok, now can we go back to the story line?  paco, you need to bring your Bird of Prey in fighting operation while I’m attempting to man a freaking humongous dreadnought class battle cruiser.  Which requires at least 300 henchman to operate it.  Who I can’t find because I have a no good minion named MarkL who lost the henchman phone book.

  18. AlburyShifton,

What?  There is nothing worse than someone trying to pass themselves off as an expert on Star Trek, the Original Series, when that same person only watched each episode once.  If you were grew up in the pre-cable years of the 1970’s like some of us, you would have watched each episode 25 times.  That and Monty Python.

What I wrote above, you can bank your savings on it, all $21.60.

  20. Oh, and...I think when the Federation finally got over itself and installed a cloaking device on the first Defiant just might have been the moment I began my road to becoming an RWDB. I used to love TNG when it aired originally, but in hindsight the “Democrats in Space” vibe (now there’s a great summation, thanks Albury) is hard to take sometimes now except as pure entertainment.

There was still plenty of equivocating in DS9 of course, but at least they dusted off the kick-ass switch for that series.

  21. And before anyone mounts an attack on my Trek credentials, yes I do remember that late-season TNG episode with the experimental Federation ship that was found stuck in a rock, half-cloaked, indicating that Starfleet wasn’t pure as driven snow when it came to cloaking devices even before DS9. (Yes, I used to be a serious ST geek before Voyager sent my interest down the crapper.)

  31. Well, what passed for uniforms for female crew in TOS was definitely a guy thing.

You that like this is a bad thing, Achillea.  Why is that?  ;-P

As for the cloaking device.....yup, the Romulans developed this technology, and sold it to the Klingons.  Who, in turn, attempted to improve on said technology in ST6: TUC by developing a proto-type Bird Of Prey which could fire while cloaked.  This, of course, was destroyed by Kirk and Sulu in the battle off of Camp Khitomer, allowing the Klingon-Federation peace treaty to be signed.

I never did hear “Democrats in Space” in relation to the ST series before, but I have to agree with that for the post-TOS shows.  DS9 was less so, but still had their off moments.  I did not watch ST:TNG with as much gusto as I did with the original series......and that’s possibly the reason why.

Or it might have been the changes in the uniforms for the female crew.....

  33. Heh, I went to Memory Alpha, and this summary of the Federation and the cloaking device.

I’d forgotten that Captain Kirk had stolen a working cloaking device from the Romulans in The Enterprise Incident, but clearly the Federation wasn’t interested in installing the technology on their ships, Ghu knows why.  But the Federation had significant involvement in cloaking from early on.

I suppose this means that Capatin Sisko (who used the cloaking device on the Defiant more tham he was supposed to) had more (or initiative) than Captain Kirk.  But that’s a topic for another discussion.

  35. Be quiet WOW, you’re out of your league.

No, no, no, no, no.  ~ sigh ~ The Defiant had the cloaking device because the Romulans gave an exception to the prohibition on cloaking in Federation starships due to DS9’s front line stand against The Dominion.  You people might be brilliant but you don’t know shit about Star Trek.

And there is a world of difference between the original series and ST:TNG.  Picard would have tried to resolve every confrontation by appealing to each side’s compassion and reason.  Kirk would have just blasted all sides he didn’t like in itsy bits.  I like President Bush’s Kirk’s way better.

Wronwright, I agree.  The best argument in a territorial dispute is having a phaser in hand.  ST:TNG was way too “warm and fuzzy” to survive in a universe full of aggressive races.

  43. Probably the best clue to TNG being “Democrats in Space” is the interpretation of the Prime Directive. In Kirk’s time, it was more a guideline. In TNG, it was Holy Writ, even to the point of allowing a people to die, so long as you recorded their culture. Star Fleet in Kirk’s time tried to save populated planets from impending doom, even if they weren’t technically developed enough to be able to do so themselves.

The later TNG refusal to save lives because it would breach the Prime Directive is pretty well directly comparable to eveything the anti-war movement has said and done in the last decade or so, from Kuwait, through Rwanda, to now.
