EFFECT, CROWDS STAY AWAY

The Gore Effect was a no-show at major Live Earth venues, although it did appear in Johannesburg:

Organisers of Live Earth Johannesburg are convinced climate change is to blame for the paltry turn-out at the Coca Cola Dome today.

Promoter John Langford claims it snowed last week for the first time in a quarter of a century, and the freezing conditions are keeping people away.

A lesser Gore Effect was also observed in Shanghai:

Despite soggy weather, the Shanghai Live Earth concert still earned itself a modicum of success with charismatic acts like Huang Xiaoming, Eason Chan and Joey Yung.

Locally, we witnessed the very first manifestation of the Al Gore III Effect:

Nineteen people have been charged with various drug offences at the Live Earth concert in Sydney yesterday.

That’s about 17 more than celebrated Live Earth in Brisbane:

Despite the city’s reputed love of live music, Brisbane residents were more interested in classic cars than the worldwide Live Earth concert extravaganza ...

Nearby, dozens of people milled around a travelling Corvette Club roadshow as proud owners polished chrome, leather and the glossiest of paintwork.

UPDATE. How were crowds at Live Earth’s Washington, DC, leg?

A few hundred spectators turned out for the concert, which began at 10:30 am.

Locals preferred live golf:

People in attendance at the PGA Tour event today in the D.C. area: 37,613, per a local sports channel.

I’m laughing so hard my sides hurt.

  2. Heh. But, I dont understand. I thought all life in Australia was killed off last decade by the ozone hole and massive drought?

So, where’d these two snugglers come from?

  5. It’s OK, I heard El Jaw pledging to make governments pledge something.  Didn’t get the details due to static on the car radio during the rainstorm.

  7. I heard some dikwit on the BBC last night describing Michael Crichton as “part of a diminishing number of sceptics” or words to that effect. The Beeb was right into the Live Earth concerts ad nauseum. In fact, I think they have become so intent on not offending their worldwide audience that they have difficulty articulating any point of view that is not leftist/anti-“racist”/anti-Israel/Pro UN-Farcical/Global Warningist orthodoxy.

And boy will you be embarrassed to admit it!

  10. It’s official. Every reference I have seen on the TV over the last few days has called the threat ‘climate change’.
The only recent mention I have seen to ‘global warming’ was in reference to The Great Global Warming Swindle.
This is going to make it a bit harder for us to prove the crackpots are wrong because, no matter what happens, the climate changes all the time.
But it is also going to make it harder for the crackpots to convince anyone that CO2 can cause cooling as well as warming.

They also blame it for New Coke, faithless lovers and David Caruso.

  12. HAHAHAHAHA!!
Tim, that picture is hysterical. And I love the “Al Gore III Effect.” I’ll bet there was a lot of that going around at these concerts.

  13. Isn’t it winter in the Southern Hemisphere?  So why should snow in South Africa be so unexpected?

BTW I notice the folks in Joburg were quoted as expecting 10,000 people, but the article doesn’t say how many showed up.  Anybody know?

  14. The Gore Effect may have been absent in some venues, but then he wasn’t present at all of them, was he?  And even Mama Gaia needs a break now and then.

Strange, they didn’t mention the Brisbane Prius Owners Club gathering, and their 1st Annual AlgoreIII Top End Run.

  22. It’s not quite the Gore effect, but the Hamburg concert had to deal with torrential rain for the first few hours.

Incidentally, last night’s broadcast of An Inconvenient Truth pulled the expected ratings, i.e. not a whole lot…6.3% of all people watching TV at the time, and 13.5% between ages 14-49. That’s quite a bit below the average for the timeslot on that network, since they usually show big-time Hollywood movies on Saturday evenings. (And they certainly didn’t advertise their broadcast of AIT any less than they usually do for the Saturday movie.)
