DOYLE OUT

Robert Doyle has quit the leadership of Victoria’s Liberal Party. Rumours swirl of a possible Jeff Kennett comeback.

  2. Pity there can’t be a similar bloodletting in Queensland- Bob Quinn has all the wit, charm and personality of a damp soap-dish, and as much political accumen as Kim Beasley.

  4. Please God no Jeff.

As much as I want to get rid of Hymie the voice activated robot, going back to Jeff is regressive in the extreme and shrieks of party that has f..k all else to offer.

How about offering up the Lasher?

That would silence all the bean-flickers at the Lyceum Club who lament about the lack of women in power.

  5. I’d be happy to see the Jeffster back again but how can he be leader when he’s not even in Parliament?

  6. Such relevance at federal level, such irrelevance in the states…

  7. Doyle was as much of a windbag as Beazley. And he’s a teacher. People don’t like their Liberal leaders being teachers. Apparently Kennett can be leader even if not in Parlt. Alternatively, someone might leave early, by-election held, Kennett in safe seat by November. Pick up preferences from minor parties such as FF, Liberals in, Bracks out. Sack all the thousands of bureaucrats Bracks has brought in, slash PR and useless Govt. advertising spending ...

    Fantasy? Or possible?

  8. I’ll back Kennett.  Could do it in the timeframe left.  The other contenders just aren’t known well enough to get the confidence of the people back to Liberals.

But then again, would he even want to go through that again?

  9. I think he would, spyder.

He pretty much left in a high dudgeon when he got his arse kicked by Bracks (aka Steve Who?). It smacked of taking his bat and ball and going home.

I’d vote for him. After the dogs breakfast that this state has become, anything to get the Lefties out.

Desparate times are calling for desparate measures and there are a lot of disillusioned voters out there. He’s done his time out in the wilderness, so he can come back now.

  10. No way would Jeff do it again.  His wife Felicity wouldn’t stand for it.  I liked Doyle, but I thought he was weighed down by the rest of the party.

Who could forget the farce at the last election when his treasurer had to resign over enrolment blunders.  That screwed his chances for that election, otherwise he might have had a decent show.

  11. What about this Jeff? He seems eminently qualified for a career in politics.

    Please Jeff, PLEASE!!!

  16. The left sure attracts the lookers, don’t it?

And how come they’re always crazy as well- it’s as if the only thing keeping them from living in a culvert and hurling cats at passers-by is the six figure income and government car provided by being parachuted into a safe seat.

  20. Hardly confirmed. Kennett said this:

Former premier Jeff Kennett will consider making a political comeback as leader of the Liberal Opposition in Victoria.

Mr Kennett said today he will consult with family and colleagues before making a decision on whether to make a run for the leadership position.

“I will use the next 48 hours to consult with my existing and former colleagues, with those whose advice I think highly of, and obviously my family,” he said this afternoon.

  23. Breaking on the news.com.au system—

    PM encourages Kennett comeback

Prime Minister John Howard says he would welcome a return to politics by former Victorian premier Jeff Kennett.

Mr Kennett told reporters he would consider a comeback following the resignation of state Liberal leader Robert Doyle today.

A spokesman for Mr Howard said the Prime Minister would welcome Mr Kennett’s return to politics.

He said Mr Howard had “long believed politics had never left Mr Kennett’s blood”.

Mr Kennett today said he had received approaches which deserved to be seriously considered.

This has to make it pretty much a certainty.

I thought Doyle never got a fair shake, but Lib’s policies were not different to Labor’s.  Whatever loony ideas Labor came up with on social issues and the environment the Libs went along with it.  If Kennett gets up perhaps we’ll get a lovely new dam on the Mitchell River, rather than Brack’s crackpot plan to use Dight’s Falls as source of water.

  25. Hope Jeff does make a comeback. As a politician he is hated by everyone from Point Hicks to the SA border, except for a couple writers here. The Libs will lose 5 seats in each of the next State and Fed elections, and the Feds will have to recall RAMSI from the Solomons and send them down to Lib Party HQ in Melbourne.

  26. So, that whole discrepency between the federal Liberals and the state ones, is that kinda like when a baseball team has brought up all their talent to the majors, leaving the minor league teams to stink to high heavens?

  27. The first thing any new leader of the Vic Liberal party has to pledge, is to drop the anti-religious vilification laws. They’ll be a healthy swag of votes right there.

  28. Absolutely, Srekwah.  If they make the two Dannys the main focus of their campaign, they will get in.

  29. #26- the federal liberal party isn’t exactly swimming in talent either- it’s more a case of the less retarded ones go federal, the real dipshits, losers and half-wits are inflicted on the states, and you don’t want to know about what winds up on councils. A species test would clean out 90% of incumbent alderpersons nation wide.
