DISSENT PUBLISHED

The Age’s John Spooner:
image
Note the duck. We may have an intra-Age cartoonist conflict on our hands. I urge Spooner to be disproportionate.

  8. Spooner will win any duel with Leunig.  If naught else, Spooner can actually draw.

But I pity the fate of the duck.  He’s the true innocent in this looming battle.  I hope he meets an honorable fate —dinner with a fine wine sounds great!

  9. Speaking of dissenters, Kos Kandidate Ned Lamont beat Joe Lieberman in the Democratic primary, giving Kos his greatest (only?) victory. Kos has discovered the path to political victory in America today - run against a Democrat. Brilliant!

Joe promises an independent run. I have no idea how pathetic the Republican party is in Connecticut, but if Lamont and Lieberman split the Dem vote and a Republican takes this heretofore safe Democratic seat, it would be a Klassic Kos moment. I dare not hope for a result so sinfully delicious that it would be fattening.

Oh, and that cartoon is great.

Sorry. #8 The_Real_Jeff’s right. It’s over before its begun. Leunig can’t draw anything other than his usual lineup of characters. That’s why he’ll never really go into political satire cartooning unless the Australan public vote in a leader who looks like Mr Curly (or perhaps resembles a duck).

Leunig’s last attempt at political satire ended tragically thanks to my own bit of Reuters inspired Photoshoppery.

  13. Dave S.,

According to the ABC News (US) program Nightline‘s Jake Tapper, Connecticut actually has more people listed as Independents than as Democrats or Republicans.

Lieberman’s strength in the state has always been his appeal to those Independents and moderate Republicans.

The Republican candidate is a bit of a non-starter for various reasons so Lieberman could and should mount a very successful campaign as an Independent against Lamont in the General Election.

Lieberman lost by only 4% (52-48) in a Democrats Only vote. Add in the Republican and Independents votes he’ll get in November and Lamont and the Kos Kids can kiss it goodbye.

It’s another Phyrric victory as Lamont was shown with Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and assorted other riff raff celebrating tonight.

  17. Not only has Spooner been the best illustrator in the country for decades, his occasional cartoons underline that he has a hundred times the irony, wit, and wisdom than Leunig will ever have.

So how is it Leunig is a “national living treasure” and Spooner isn’t?

  27. Kos Bialystok has reached the last reel of his movie—the scene where he delivers an unexpected success that ruins him.

He has cut the Democratic Party wide open.  They can’t hide behind the “lefty fringe” excuse anymore. This is the voice of the mainstream Democratic Party. The only questions now are how bloody their next national convention will be (Chicago 68 II: The Same Old Generation?) and how soon Hillary triangulates back from defending Israel to screaming “you f—-ing Jew bastard!” at people in public again.

  31. We’re on the same wave length, Rob Read; the first thing I thought of was Far Side—Larson is hands down my favorite cartoonist. Looks to me like Spooner is telling Leunig to “bring it”.

Pretty pathetic, as it is in most blue states. The Rep candidate has a number of problems, the largest probably being his sizeable gambling debts. I expect a big Republican cross-over vote for Lieberman in the general. This actually is the result I was hoping for (although I will change my mind if Joe blows it in November). Let the Democrats now deal with their deranged nutroots. Let Democratic candidates run as fast as they can from even nominal national security positions. Yessiree, just what Lord Rove had in mind.

Another satisfying moment: Crazy lady Cynthia McKinney got put down. Click on the picture of Cindy at this FNC report for a real treat.

  34. From the McKinney article:

But Anthony Tyler, 47, said he backed McKinney because of her outspoken nature. “She speaks her mind, regardless of the issue. She is straight forward,” he said.

Now, I’m normally pretty liberal about people’s likes and dislikes (each to their own, and all that), but I fucking hate people who think that being “outspoken” or “straight-forward” alone is an admirable quality absent any evidence that the person in question knows fuck-all about the subjects they’re commenting on.

  35. This is the part of the Lamont victory that’s tough to take: The Unmaking of a Senator: How Bloggers Pulled It Off

Now that it has played a major role in helping to defeat Joe Lieberman in the Connecticut Senate primary Tuesday, the Netroots’ moment has finally arrived.

(the silver lining)Either way, this primary win means the Netroots now must be treated by Democratic leaders and politicians like the party’s other major power centers — pro-abortion rights groups, African-Americans and unions.

Otherwise, it’s working out as planned. Michael Moore has crawled back out from under his rock and has a message for the Democrats:

Let the resounding defeat of Senator Joe Lieberman send a cold shiver down the spine of every Democrat who supported the invasion of Iraq and who continues to support, in any way, this senseless, immoral, unwinnable war. Make no mistake about it: We, the majority of Americans, want this war ended—and we will actively work to defeat each and every one of you who does not support an immediate end to this war.

  38. #25 No paco, the teddy bear is not really there at this stage.
It is only imported AFTER the bomb hits, to add poignancy, and to suggest kiddy slaughter in Reuters photo ops.
Reuters people never wonder why all the soft toys are sitting amidst rubble, but are still in pristine dust-free condition as if they are being sold on E-bay.

The duck is a Leunig metaphor for innocence, but this time for “DUCK!”
