DENNIS WEAVER
These things always happen in threes. Following the deaths of Don Knotts and Darren McGavin, we now farewell Dennis Weaver.
Dennis Weaver was a greenie, but a sincerely decent bloke. He was a “lets make less garbage” kind of greenie, and he actually lived that way. Not a pontificating “the rest of you should pay more taxes because I feel guilty” or “I don’t care if they killed 100 million, they’re still nicer than Dick Cheney” kind of blowhard we have just rightly eviscerated in another thread. I especially liked Weaver in the TV movie “Duel” where he battles a rogue tanker truck (yeah, yeah, road train, whatever). Good man. Wish we had more of him.

I used to love McCloud. A highly unlikely premise, but great fun.
He will be missed.

Clint underwent a butterflian metamorphous-in-reverse to begin as Dennis Weaver’s freckled cherub son to emerge the ugliest actor to ever carve out a career in mainstream cinema (and TV, especially in a movingly empathetic portrayal of a serial killer in Seinfeld). In terms of current political events, I can only say: Vaile Weaver, Hail Howard.

One memorable line from his character as the limping deputy Chester in Gunsmoke:
“Mister Dillon, Mister Dillon, there’s been a killin’.....”

Posted by Pedro the Ignorant on 2006 03 01 at 06:51 AM • permalinkI seem to recall an episode of McCloud where he was dispatched to Australia; hanging out at the bar, drinking beer, only informed later that beer in Australia was a good deal stronger than that in the U.S. Of course, someone at the hotel tried to kill him and he was utterly, reelingly drunk.
Great stuff. Try doing THAT on the networks today and see where it gets you.
