CLIMATE OBEYS LAW

Arnold Schwarzenegger signed anti-warming legislation on September 27. Rather than risk prison or the Governator’s wrath, California’s climate is aggressively complying with Schwarzenegger’s new rules:

Early Saturday, thermometers registered just 8 degrees at Lancaster, 22 at Palmdale and 30 in Santa Barbara, according to the weather service. Much of Los Angeles County stayed in the low 40s.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger issued an emergency proclamation Friday citing “conditions of extreme peril to the safety of persons and property ... as a result of extreme low temperatures and freezing conditions."

Rare for a weather system to behave so obediently, but there you have it. Californian citrus industry representative Joel Nelsen notes a pattern:

"We can talk about global warming, but we’ve had 23 nights since Nov. 1 when we ran frost protection,” he said. “Last year there were six by this time of year."

(Via Chris S. and Florida’s Bill R., who emails: “The Gorebot has to be nearby for this unseemly weather.”)

  1. You know, when the states of the South seceded from the union, we had a big, bloody war to get them back. However, whenever I hear people talking about how California should secede—or be kicked out, or just fall into the ocean in a big earthquake—you can sense the vastness of the indifference.

(Full disclosure: I don’t think that way—I liked Los Angeles when I went on my one visit, and many of my favorite “right wing death beasts” bloggers live there; I am just making an observation on what I sense from the general population.)

  2. Andrea - remember in the 1980s when there was a semi-serious effort by a group of Northern the state of California in to Northern and Southern?

BTW - if the climate did disobey, who would arrest it?  I cannot imagine the size of the handcuffs....or the holding cell.  Would the citrus growers have to post bail?

This globall worming is just weird.

I didn’t even know that Algore was in town… ??

  4. Wonder how that cold weather is playing with Southern California’s lefty envirocultists?  Especially since most houses down there have no furnaces.

  5. I think this is getting much bigger, guys, and we should be worried. Gore doesn’t have to be in places now to start new Mini-Ice-Ages--the vapour trails from his many jet flights around the world must be causing this even when he, personally, is not in the area. I don’t know about as far south as NYC for today, but in Southern Ontario the summer just ended last night. Sh*t. Now we get Gaia’s backlash. I’m scared, guys. Really scared.

Well, of course the climate is complying!  This The Terminator!  Diss The Man, and Skynet comes down on your butt.

Plus, I heard he swings a mean sword.

If it does, we should crown Arnold king.

  10. Governor Umlaut is very forward thinking.  Between the state minimum wage hike, mandatory health care for all including illegals, and this farcical global warming legislation, he’s getting a big headstart on the California Depression.

  11. Funny how we heard all about the 25 consecutive ‘above normal’ temps in the East, and nothing about the 23 nights in a row of cold weather that happened in our same country.  Hmmm… It is almost like a conspiricy.

By the way, the lake froze last night,I can see miles of ice as I type this. Heavy snow expected tomorrow. A week ago people were ready to plant vegetables on Al Gore’s say so.

  14. #7 Wait a minute Spiny, I was overflying So. Cal at that time. People complaigned I had brought the cold miserable weather to Sydney and when I returned to Ottawa this early morning, the temperature dropped to it’s usual negative area for the first time in weeks.

My god, I’ve caught Al Gore Disease.

  15. Since one of my most unfavorite (is that a word?) persons hails from SoCal and, although it has lived here (SoTex) for the last 30+ years, ALWAYS introduces itself as “I’m from L.A.”, I’m all for letting AlGore work his magic on the state.

Also, since they won’t allow the construction of nasty old power plants in their hallowed environs, I say let ‘em freeze in the dark.

Everyone, including illegals, already gets health care whenever they need it—by just showing up at an Emergency Room. As I read it, what Ahhnold is calling for is a law requiring every resident to carry health insurance, just as we must carry automobile liability insurance; except in this case, if a person cannot afford it, the State will pay for it. Those of us who make enough that we have to pay State income tax will, naturally, be disqualified from any freebies. Pay-as-you-go will no longer be an option. My medical bills over the last 6 years, including OTC medications, probably total less than $2,000 - which is about what I will have to pay for insurance every 6 months if this scheme goes through.

  20. I have a great idea. The US congress is implementing legislation to raise the minimum wage. How about doing the same thing for minimum temperature?

They can raise it in stages… 8C in 60 days, 9C next year. After all, the warmening is real, might as well enforce it.

  21. Here in Wisconsin the other day the temperature hit 40 degrees F, which the TV people were appalled by. Later on they showed the record high for the same date, which was 60 degrees back in 1870.

  22. As a guy who used to work at Edwards AFB, I’m still trying to figure this out:

8 degrees at Lancaster, 22 at Palmdale

To the uninitiated, these are practically twin cities. Did the Gorebot spend some time in Landscatter?

Well here’s another example of an erstwhile “conservative” changing his spots.

Any other American conservatives here starting to feel like a political hooker?

35 degrees F in Los Angeles this morning. Brrr. Arnold is Arnold, I guess - even the weather obeys him.

That may well be true in some of the poorer neighborhoods, but any decent home here in SoCal has central heating.

Why, what do you know?  My non-existent furnace just came on.

  31. Oh Spiney,

Are you going to be in for a shock!  I doubt your insurance rates will remain as low as they were before this bill.  In NY, everyone is insured as well and if you’re income qualified, it’s pretty cheap, but if you’re not, expect to pay anywhere from $1500 to $3900 a month for a family.  Yes, I said month…
