CBS IS FOX’S FAULT

The New Yorker’s Ken Auletta blames Fox News for perceptions of bias across all media:

Then you’ve got Fox News, which is admittedly more partisan or perceived as more partisan, and so people then start to say, hey, wait a second, they’re all partisan.

If only Fox had never existed. Then people wouldn’t get these crazy ideas.

  1. TERENCE SMITH: Andy Kohut—for example, in the CBS case, the 60 Minutes case—that issue was raised. Was it politically motivated, the piece that was so critical of President Bush? What does the public think?

The fact that he has to ask, speaks volumes.

ANDREW KOHUT: Back in the 1988 campaign, 58 percent said there was no media bias in the reporting.

    Ahhh, we were so young.

Also Kohut: There is this mixture in cable television of reporting and shout shows and commentary shows, and the public doesn’t make distinctions between the news shows and the commentary shows. They see it as one—one thing.

That’s right, were a bunch of idiots.

  2. Ken Auletta doesn’t know the difference between “admittedly more partisan or perceived as more partisan”?  In other words, if I admit to being guilty according to Kenny, it’s the same as if someone else perceives me to be guilty.

No wonder these guys are confused and angry.  They shouldn’t be outdoors without their attendants.

  3. Remember the Twilight Zone episode where the astronauts found a mini-civilization? They appeared as giants to the little people. Then, at the end, two real giants showed up and showed the earth astronaut as little himself?

Maybe we’d all see the MSM for what they think they are if only Fox News (the new giant on the scene) had never shown up.

  4. One of the talking heads from Tim’s link:

We’re not seeing the boldness of publishers and broadcasters of years before who are willing to stick their necks out and say, this is wrong.

That’s what happened in Watergate. That’s what happened with the Pentagon Papers. That’s what happened in segregation. It’s not happening now. It’s not happening with the war in Iraq to the degree that there are broadcasters or publishers who believe that the United States policy is misfounded. They don’t have the courage of their conviction. I think that that more than anything else is causing us problems with the public.

She thinks one of the problems with the media is that they haven’t come out against the war enough! The only bias mentioned in the show is Fox’s bias to the right. The solution is for the media to be more in-your-face with its leftism, which in their eyes isn’t bias but truth. What a bunch of maroons.

  6. Boy, for a country smaller than California, you Aussies sure can do some damage.

Here’s big-time PBS (our public television network) personality Auletta bitching that there’d be no media bias if Fox hadn’t slithered onto the screen. Why? Because Rootin’ Rupert Murdoch started the damned thing. And we know where he came from…

If you people would just leave us alone we’d be shoving daisies into gun barrels. But no. You had to piss off Auletta, and look what happens.

  8. Irony is Rupert supported Whitlam in the 1970s.

So you can probably blame old Gough for turning him away from the left.

  10. OK. So who do we blame for the state of the ABC, which, like the BBC, has a whole blog (or more!) devoted to observing the bias exhibited regularly.
Was it on David Hill’s watch, or did it predate that?

  11. Predate? pre-date. antecede?
Oh what the hell, when did it achieve critical mass?
