CAVALCADE OF SIDEBURNS

Starring in this photo tribute to Ashes heroes of the 70s are Jeff Thomson, Rod Marsh, Ian Botham, Geoffrey Boycott, Ian Chappell, Doug Walters, David Gower, Dennis Lillee, Ashley Mallett, Brian Johnston, Bob Willis, Terry Jenner, Tony Greig, Derek Randall, and Ian Redpath, among others.

UPDATE. “Bedecked with wretchedly unfunny Steve Bell cartoons, and serving organic biscuits and fair trade coffee.” Gideon Haigh, covering this year’s Ashes series for The Guardian,  reports from that paper’s Newsroom Café.

UPDATE II. Joke currently circulating via email:

Q: What do Michael Jackson and Geraint Jones have in common?

A: They both wear gloves for no apparent reason.

  2. You didn’t notice the bared chests and the gold chains? What star sign were they?

  4. Notice that they are all a’smokin’ and and a’drinkin?

Legendary smokers were Doug Walters and Ashley Mallett. Legend has it that their team mates would light up a durry for them as they came off the ground and hand it to them as soon as they hit the dressing room.

  5. Go to picture number 8.  Why are they all dressed up like that lead guitarist from AC/DC?

  6. Favorite line:

[H]e overheard an nonagenarian in the Long Room spluttering to the members around him: `I say, d’ya know there’s a bally woman talking to Swanton in the committee room? What’s the world coming to?’ Errr, yes, murmured one of his fellows: it was…well…the Queen.

BTW, the Michael Jackson line (normally (“Both wear one glove for no apparent reason!”) is an ancient baseball chestnut that disappeared from the US around the time that anyone here stopped caring about Michael Jackson.

  8. Looks like a bunch of guys participating in an Isaac Asimov look-alike contest.

#6 “... around the time that anyone here stopped caring about Michael Jackson”. Or baseball, for that matter.
