CARTOON KILLED

Joe Bob Briggs reviews a comical case of cartoon cowardice

UPDATE. There are echoes here of the NYT’s Motoon coverage, as mentioned in this Mark Steyn interview:

The New York Times, at the time of the Danish cartoon thing a few months ago, they actually declined to publish the Danish cartoons of Mohammed on the grounds that they might be offensive, and so to illustrate one of their stories about the cartoon crisis, they printed an illustration of the Virgin Mary covered in dung. Heh!

The SMH’s coverage was even more evasive; one of their pieces on the Motoon debacle featured a picture of me. Thanks for that, SMH.

  1. As a lot of commentators here (yes I am a long time reader/non-poster) are fond of saying ” beyond parady!”

  3. Boy, the press sure is fearless when it comes to offending pacifist religions.

The other one… Not so much.

  4. Thank you, thank you for reintroducing me to the Wittenburg Door, a great Christian satire magazine I sought out in college.  I think I’d tried to find it once online but couldn’t, many thanks.

  6. O/T, but must recommend article in today’s Oz: Up Against The Global Warming Zealots in which Martin Durkin responds to his treatment at the hands of Snow Cone Tone in the ABC’s screening of the Great Global Warming Swindle. The article might just strike a chord with all those in Vic, ACT, NSW, Qld and the NT noticing a distinct lack of Global Warming in recent times.

  7. An anti-censorship publication censoring itself? I’m sure there a term for it, like “sticking your head up your arse.”

Who cares if muslims get angry? They’re angry all the time anyway, at people who are other-flavoured muslims and people who aren’t muslims at all. They shout and scream and shoot guns at every excuse of offence.

The less we care, the better. Leave ‘em in the 7th century where they belong.

  8. The saddest part is that they don’t even see the irony, or acknowledge their tolerance of the intolerant.

  9. Joe Bob Briggs! I’ve wondered whatever happened to him. 20 years ago or so he had a program where he would show old B movies and talk shit about them during the break. He showed Soylent Green and when introducing the scene where the old man goes to die, Briggs wouldn’t joke about that but treated it very respectfully. Anyway, I’d like to hear more from Joe Bob.

... acknowledge their tolerance of the intolerant.

Oooo.  I like that expression.  It capsulizes one serious problem with the West and especially Western media.  I think I’ll get a copyright for it.

... acknowledge their tolerance of the intolerant. - attributed to wronwright

Now, I better send a notice to ann j to stop using my quote.

  12. I don’t know exactly when that article was written (it was dated July/August 2007), but as bovious alluded to above, Doug Marlette just recently died.  He was killed as a passenger in a car wreck on July 10.  Well, it was a pick-up truck wreck, actually.

  13. The worst part, I think, is that all these assorted politically correct anti-censorship weenies have convinced themselves that they’re doing the right thing.  There is no deception as effective as self-deception.

  14. dead in a truck wreck. is there any more info on this incident?
American cartoonist dared make fun of Mohammad and is now dead in a single car accident - has too much of the “his fate was written” feel to it.

Can we be sure from the vague discription that this guy wasn’t a media martyr/jihad victim?

The problem is that they are trying to force 7th century ideals on our society.  The reason that many people have a BIG problem with Islam is the fact that the noisy ignorant mouthpieces of this creed of ignorance and hate want to stifle free speech.  Their “religion” is so debilitated that it is only held together with violence or threats of violence.  Publish anything you like that exposes the repugnant beliefs that the Koran exhorts it’s flock to believe.

I always liked his Joe Bob’s Drive In show (on Showtime?) better than the more famous Mystery Science Theater 3000. I loved his politically-incorrect rating system that consisted of the flick’s “dead body count” “naked breast count” and “aarvarking count”... AFAIK, he invented the “-fu” meme, although I think it was originally used to describe a movie’s fight scenes.

  19. The extreme cowardice of most of the MSM in reporting Islamic [or Palestinian] terror is one of the most significant and shocking stories of our time.
While they rush to print inaccurate condemnation of the West or Israel, they are coy about revealing the truth about the enemy they most do not want to fight out of fear.
The West’s ‘fifth columnist’ in this very asymmetric war is—the columnist!

  20. Yep, I love Joe Bob Briggs (aka John Bloom)—I remember him from hosting TNT’s MonsterVision in the late 1990s. Wish he were still on TV. They seldom if ever played actual monster movies, but Joe Bob was very entertaining during breaks.

One time during “The Warriors” he put up a New York City map and did quite an analysis of the movie-related geography. & He always gave encouragement to the imprisoned convicts who watched the show—kinda touching really.
