  1. It’s a fake cake!

    Yes, but is it plastic?!

  2. The original version of Wm. Harnett’s _After the Hunt_ had a fake sheet cake on a table too, but art historians don’t usually bring it up.

  3. Hey, I was at a wedding once (Whitby, Ontario, summer of 1977) where they had a fake cake, with a little slot in the side so the bride could be photographed ``cutting’’ it.  (The actual cake was presliced and distributed to the guests afterwards.) So the practice not only predates Dubya’s presidency but is found in non-US locales. If Adams et al want to get indignant about it, be my guest, but for God’s sake get a little perspective.

  7. Wait! America is the Great Satan. The Cake is simulated devil’s food. Coincidence? I think not.

  8. In case anyone’s unsure, it’s a real cake.  In day to day food, the military is mediocre and uninspired, but when holidays roll around, it’s quite amazing what the cooks can do.

The standard procedure is to let everyone see it as they go through the line, then cut it up once most people have eaten.  (Assuming the chow hall is big enough to hold most of the people at once)

When I was in Kuwait in 03, we never had a shortage of cake or ice cream.  We might not have gotten the ice cream we wanted… (Kuwaiti Danish Dairy Magnum Bars) but we always had something.

  9. We used to play tricks on newbies to the office by covering sponges with chocolate icing and inviting them to cut themselves a piece.  Come to think of it, I’ve had a few pieces of wedding cake that were kind of like that.

  12. Kevin, we still have the Kuwaiti Danish Dairy Magnum Bars here, but real ice cream is available now, sometimes in Baskin & Robbins flavors.  Doesn’t taste plastic at all!

  13. I would stack a magnum bar up against a Dove bar any day.

I don’t think my taste buds were. We had a B&R on base, but the KDD stuff was so good, that no one ever got a regular ice cream there.  Usually a shake or a sundae - which meant the line was nice and slow.
