BRISBANE BEATABLE
In 1989, Brisbane—then known as the Bears, and based on the Gold Coast—scored a freakish round 20 win over eventual premiers Hawthorn. The Hawks complained that their game plan had been ruined by an airline strike which delayed their flight to Queensland, but it was still a remarkable result; Hawthorn was the powerhouse of that era, and Brisbane’s next six matches against Hawthorn (from 1990 to 1993) all ended in predictable failure.
These days the Brisbane Lions dominate, and Hawthorn struggles. Except for today; Hawthorn held a five-goal break at half time, and currently lead by 42 points about midway through the third quarter. Go Hawks!
UPDATE. Three-quarter time: Hawks by 46 points.
UPDATE II. 15 minutes to go in the final quarter: Hawks by 58 points!
UPDATE III. Make that 64 points, following a goal to Spider Everett. 330 possessions to Hawthorn; only 189 to Brisbane.
UPDATE IV. Lead cut back to 46 points; only eight minutes to go.
UPDATE V: “Hawthorn may still be a work in progress, but yesterday’s 46-point upset slaying of the Brisbane Lions signals the rebirth of the former superpower ... The victory, Alastair Clarkson’s first as coach, was the Hawks’ first win against the Lions since Round 18, 2000.”

I would be more impressed with the Brisbane result if I had backed the Hawks in the tipping comp. Two weeks in a row the Lions have let me down, along with some other teams last week who blew big leads in the final quarter.
People who want to follow the progress of the tipping comp can check out the real game. Not prepared to divulge my position on the ladder at present, not good enough for publication.I have been a Hawthorn supporter for 46 years - from around the age of 3. It all started in an unfortunate family tragedy. Both my parents are ardent Carlton supporters.
One day my father was heading out to mow the lawn and noticed that I was sitting in front of the telly paying attention to a VFL (as AFL then was) game. The TV was black and white. He pointed at a Carlton player on screen saying “that’s the team to barrack for son!!” Ah, if only he had waited another minute or indeed thought to mention the team’s name.
He returned after about an hour and was shocked to hear me yelling “Go, Hawks”. “No,no,nooooo…” he screamed in anguish. Tragically, for my parents, I proved to be immune to pleading and stubbornly held on to my Hawks allegiance.
But guess what, yesterday I picked the Lions in my tipping competition. It wont happen again, on yesterday’s form the Hawks can beat anybody.

“Team work is the thing that talks.”
And they played like they believe it. What, a dozen goal-kickers?
Should spur some Monday’s experts to speculate about the Lions - is this the end of an era?
