BILL’S BIG MOUTH

Liberal Senator Bill Heffernan has apologised to Julia Gillard. As he should, the big idiot.

  1. Classic own goal.  Gillard was on the ropes and Hef has given her a lifeline.

What a complete and utter tosser.

  2. I agree, a boorish statement that is not helpful or entirely fair. However, its fine for the previous Labor leader to make a comment about Howards’ tongue and its proximity to the President of the USA’s anus let alone Rudds’ recent statements at the Party’s love-in.

  6. No excuse, but while he said it last year, The Age and SMH are running with the story like an grinning Olympic sprinter, after the gold medal but before the drug test.

Gillard’s physical barrenness might be off-limits but her intellectual vapidity is plain for all to see. Her response:

“I think it’s an indication that Mr Heffernan’s a man of the past, with very old-fashioned views,” she said.

That, the day after she proposed taking Australia back to the industrial Dark Ages of the pre-Hawke, pre-Keating days while inviting Australia’s entire business community to butt out of politics.

    Inclusiveness, Labor-style.

Dont keep us in suspense name the dragon slayers involved!!
Id disagree a tad on Gillards private life being out of bounds. She holds herself up as a woman of power and influence. Many male pollies are exposed for extra-marital affairs (particularly if they have run a strong families and faithfullness line). Why should a female unmarried pollie who (if eggs info is right) breaks up or is the “other woman” in a relationship be held to a lower standard?
Im putting this clumsily but why should she (as the other woman) be held to a lower standard than a married man?

Doesn’t realise that his guttersnipe attacks on his opponents are what turned Australians against him. Hey, I like The Old Y Restaurant.  It’s in the middle of NO WHERE, OHIO.  But they got great food for cheap prices. The owner’s 82 year old mother-in-law makes all the salads and his brother-in-law, who’s retired now, makes the pies.

Great ribs, although for $13.50 it’s pricey for a rural area.  If that’s too much, you can get a great meat loaf dinner with salad bar !!! for $7.

  34. Actually, we have a similar preoccupation over here with demanding our politicians lead the sort of Ozzie-and-Harriet lifestyle that we otherwise mock and deride as “old-fashioned” and “patriarchal.” The average American can have as many unpleasant divorces and live-ins as we want, but a politician’s marital history turns us all into Mrs. Grundy scolds. Needless to say, Democrats get more of a pass because everyone knows they are simply weaker-willed in the marital-morals department (see, “they can’t help themselves, poor things”); Republicans get the brunt of the effects of this double standard. But they get it from both sides—the Dems of course take advantage of seeing conservatives fail at standards they themselves refuse to follow, but what Florence King called “Connube Cons” are just as bad. These are the so-called conservatives who think you can’t be a good person, never mind a good leader, if you aren’t married with two or three brats to show off on the podium.

Women especially get this sort of treatment, as the Fear of the Spinster runs through American culture like mold through bleu cheese. And apparently through yours too—possibly our similar colonial heritage sees a non-childbearing woman as a threat to the health of the settlement.

  74. At the weekend a union official - following the example of Rudd, who’d spent all day Saturday ridiculing the Prime Minister with ageist boilerplate - compared John Howard to a stain on a bedsheet. No “outrage” or demand for an apology issued forth from the office of the Opposition Leader. As for Ms Gillard…

The repeatedly stated underpinning of her so-called IR “policy” is that it is “family friendly”; she’s concerned about “family pressures”; but heartless ideologue Howard isn’t so concerned, his policies have “hurt families” - so goes the glib Gillard story. This has been repeated for months. The message is: here is someone who knows what families today really need. Well - sorry to disagree folks - but let’s be brutally honest: Gillard doesn’t have a family. Nor has she ever wanted one. When she trashes the PM’s policies under the rubric of “family”, she doesn’t - in point of fact - know what the hell she’s talking about. Household pressure for Julia is working out what to put in her famously empty fruit bowl.

Is Heffernan an idiot? Indubitably. Was he voicing what a lot of people are thinking? Absolutely. Does anyone here seriously think the Labor Party itself would not ponder very carefully the possibility of electing Ms Gillard leader precisely because of this single/childless issue? If so: get real.

Do we have to choose just one? Can’t they BOTH be the biggest?

Although this was an own-goal by Heff., the people who are watching Gillard’s industrial policy (well it’s her portfolio, right?) with dismay are not going to be distracted by any amount of:

“And in todays TOP STORY! Heffernan said a BAD, um-ah! I’m telling!”

Also, he might be trying to put the idea out that she doesn’t have kids and all the “family friendly workplace” guff is some kind of over-compensation, false empathy if you will.

PS: Andrea at #34: Fear is the deepest form of respect, remember that… but I really don’t know that Aussies “fear spinsters”. Certainly doesn’t ring true to me.

  76. What a pity Heffernan and WA Liberal polly Colin Barnett can’t get together and form an official Idiots’ Party instead of contaminating and damaging the Libs with their stupidity.

That said, did anyone ever find out who created the forgeries in the Kirby affair that sent Heffernan over the top?

And that said, what kind of person would actually want Gilliard to breed?

  77. I was very amused to see Eva Cox come out swinging in defence of Julia on the news tonight.  I thought she was dead and I just didn’t read about it seeing as how Sheik Catmeat has been spouting off for the last six months and not a peep out of Eva.

That just cracked me up. I can just see Ms. Gillard quoting you in defence of her heterosexuality.

  82. “I apologise to Julia Gillard and anyone else who was offended by my completely inappropriate remarks,” he said.

Another apology that borders on a non-apology. What’s the matter with “my remarks were completely inappropriate and I apologise for making them”? An apology meant only for those poor misguided souls who are foolish enough to be offended, so typical of the political class, is not really an apology. At least not in this deliberately barren woman’s book.

  83. #48 and #51: you’ve read me wrong on this.

I’m no lefty - and not a troll (just blunt).

I just think those comments are unhelpful - and I assume that’s what Tim was getting at in his post about “the big idiot”.

  84. Wild Bill Heffernan is a well known idiot. He is an unguided missile that I don’t think even a guidance system could help. He just goes bang when he feels like it.

Hopefully he will be the sacrifical lamb and can spend the rest of his days on the farm in Junee waiting for it to rain. It would be appropriate for Julie Bishop to be the one to weild the knife.

He has however, lanced the boil and now all sorts of puss about her home wrecking proclivities can seep out, which will do her no good with the mums at home. It was Emerson I think.

As to Habib’s comment I have pointed out before, willing gets 6/10.

I sometimes wonder if Lib/Nat pollies realise the difference in gravity of their situation and ours.

If they stuff this up then they can just have rest in oppostion for a few years, while we have to deal with it and a Labor govt will have a much greater impact on our lives than theirs.

Here in Queensland they certainly didn’t realise the gravity and now we are beset with this blood nut idiot and his mob for another four years.

JWH should view the situation in cricket parlance. We are in the semis now and no silly run outs, dropping of sitter catches or throwing away of wickets will be tolerated.

Suggest very heavy culling between now and the final. Team players only.

  85. #74- I was wondering the same thing - is Heff just the nominated blunt object the Libs use when they want to publically say what everyone is thinking?

As for La Gillard - well, partner at Slater & Gordon. What more do you need to know?

  86. Firstly, Heffo is a boofhead.

But consider which is the bigger crime:

    (a) a silly old duffer on the backbench who’ll never be a Minister making an inappropriate sexist remark;

    OR

    (b) the potential Deputy Prime Minister of Australia telling business that they will get it in the neck if they do anything to oppose Labor’s IR laws?

    Get some perspective here people!!

  87. Secondly, Heff was just being polite.

What he could have said is:

“Julia Gillard is an inappropriate person to be Deputy Prime Minister because she is a bisexual predator.  She broke up Craig Emerson’s marriage and got slapped down in the Holy Grail when, after too much alcohol, she made inappropriate advances to a fellow Labor female MP.  Both occasions demonstrate that she has extremely poor judgement for a public figure in whom great responsibility would be placed.”

  88. The PM’s special friend has done you all a great service, revealing your true and honest feelings. But I can’t understand all these calls applauding his cowardly apology. Surely you wouldn’t want him to back down? That would be soooooooooooooo politically correct of you all. What happened to the right to free speech that was ushered in by your favorite fishwife, Pauline? After all it’s a free country.

  89. Heffernan is a fool, and a rude fool: there’s no place for this kind of crassness in public or private life.  Having said that, Julia’s comeback - not that she should have needed to make one - was the tired old trope about Howard’s mythical nostalgia for the 50s.  As other commenters have already noted, what could be more retrograde than the bread-and-dripping cloth-cap valve-radio IR world which she promises to return us to?  I’m surprised she didn’t have a colliery band at the ALP conference.

  92. Heff’s apology sounded less sincere than a Palestinian peace conference. After one monotonous, disgruntled line, he finished with a phlegmatic “There you go.” Ouch.

  99. #65 Did the poor lass have whipmarks (from working in Herr Flick’s office)?

No but she had problems straightening her head from tilting it too often and severe scarring on her back from where all the knives have been shoved (she is an ex Beazley staffer). They have a whole bunch of Beazley’s left overs doing shit all because they couldn’t be sacked when Rudd arrived as that would have been more fodder for the Lib IR rebuttal.
