BIGNESS CONSIDERED

Unimpressed by the latest column, reader Meredith emails (under the subject heading “Zeroes not heroes”):

Sir,

it might interest you to know that some of us out here actually are concerned about the environment our children will inherit; some believe that dashing the brains out of baby seals is abhorrent; that life, other than human, is also sacred and should be respected (ever heard of albert schweitzer?) and that Greenpeace, a non profit and non sponsored organisation does a great job of at least trying to keep the bastards honest (ever heard of the Rainbow Warrior?).

Those of us who embrace any of the above (not necessarily all) would consider you an unintelligent fascist prick. A big one!

Nice of you to say so, miss, although I don’t believe we’ve met. Meanwhile, the Canadian government is stomping down on Sea Shepherd sealie-feelies, who earlier warned against government action:

"If the Canadian Coast Guard attempts to board the Farley Mowat, a Dutch ship in international waters,” said Dutch Captain Cornelissen, “I will consider that an act of war."

And Sea Shepherd chief bollard Paul Watson adds:

It’s technically an act of war to board a vessel outside the 12-mile [19 kilometres] limit without the permission of the captain ...

What a total hypocrite.

  1. ”...that life, other than human, is also sacred..."
Obviously, from this comment, the lovely Meredith is opposed to abortion. Of human babies, not merely seals, to be precise.

Of course.  In the leftie universe, hypocrisy is a normal state of affairs.  “What’s required for thee does not apply to me” comes to mind.

  3. So Meredith thinks it’s acceptable for others to stop:

    1) People from working to provide for their families and pay taxes to fund the dole checks of greenies; and

    2) People from having the freedom to choose what to eat and where to buy it from;

    but not acceptable to stop:

    1) People from killing other people in airports; and

    2) People from slandering the memories of people who worked hard because their beliefs on animal rights are different.

Sounds like someone I would never want to have a beer with… because it seems I’d be left with the tab.

I think Mr Watson may have had this explained to him by someone with authority quite recently and so it’s nice and fresh in his mind (see total hypocrite link).

Wasn’t Patrick Moore denounced by his former colleagues as a traitor and “corporate tool” recently?

    Perceptive comment from that link:

Well, you know, most whacko movements weren’t whacko in the beginning (there are exceptions, of course).

Feminists wanted women to have the right to vote.

Black activists wanted an end to slavery (and later, Jim Crow laws).

Environmentalists wanted the Cuyahoga River to not catch on fire any more.

    All perfectly reasonable goals.

After things have improved, the non-crazoids say “Well, that problem is solved. There are plenty of other problems to work on—time to Move On.”

And as for Greenpeace being non-profit. Sure. It’s a commercial organisation just as concerned with revenues and surpluses as any business - same as Oxfam, St Vincent de Paul, Salvaion Army, &c.  Non-profit doesn’t mean not making a lot of money. It merely means funds can’t be paid to the directors, i.e., not for the profit of the directors.

The difference with Greenpeace is you can join and ask for a couple of the financials - and you’ll be told to piss off. It’s a secretive, shadowy private club.

The directors and managers can draw a salary and take fringe benefits and I’d be guessing that in the case of Greenpeace they’re on a nice little earner thanks to tools like Meredith.

With respect to Watson and others of his stripe, I’ve always believed that, in most cases, those who arrogate to themselves the right to take direct action in contravention of the law are driven by (a) the arrested development of their maturity and (b) a terminal indolence stemming from a deep-seated aversion to honest work. The only difference between Watson and, say, a bank robber is that the former has dressed up his social pathology in the guise of “the public good”, whereas the latter straight-forwardly focuses on his bottom line.

Hell, I wish that Barry said we typical white folks wanted to run illegal aliens back to Mexico. I’d say, “Hell, yes.” What he said was that we had an anti-immigrant attitude. We who oppose illegal aliens are way too quiet about the sly way the media and the Dems always use the term “anti-immigration.” Whenever I get into this argument, and my opponent pulls the “this country was founded by immigrants” card, my reply is, “I’m sorry, I thought we were talking about illegal aliens. Do you want to talk about immigration? OK, I’ll start. I say we should raise the yearly quota at least 300%, and streamline the procedure - the increase to be filled with people with skills. I want to poach the world of talent and make it easier for them to become citizens. What do you think? And then can we get back to talking about illegal aliens?”

  52. that life, other than human, is also sacred and should be respected (ever heard of albert schweitzer?)

And, that dear Meredith, includes the sealers whose deaths were celebrated by Sea Shepherd captain Paul Watson.

As for Watson’s comments, it isn’t quite hypocrisy. Watson considers himself to be at war with Japanese whalers and boarding the whalers was, in his view, a legitimate act in that war. He relies on the Japanese not responding with deadly force, so he can wage his war without getting himself hurt.

Personally, I think he is a pirate and should be dealt with as one. Deadly force on the high seas, arrest and prison if he appears in port. If you are looking for racist hypocrisy look no further than an Australian government that allows a white man’s pirate vessel to refuel and replenish while calling for action against Asian and African pirates.

Canadian action against the Sea Shepherd vessel is legitimate because Watson had already declared war. It also shows the Canadians have bigger testicles than the Australians. We would not have said that a couple of years back.

  62. Also speaking of pirates, the politically correct nanny state has some new rules for its Navy:

THE Royal Navy, once the scourge of brigands on the high seas, has been told by the Foreign Office not to detain pirates because doing so may breach their human rights.

Warships patrolling pirate-infested waters, such as those off Somalia, have been warned that there is also a risk that captured pirates could claim asylum in Britain.

The Foreign Office has advised that pirates sent back to Somalia could have their human rights breached because, under Islamic law, they face beheading for murder or having a hand chopped off for theft.

So, let me get this straight.  The British Navy will be patrolling the seas looking for pirates.  Pirates who breach the human rights of honest seafaring folk, sometimes by killing said folk.  Once the pirates are found, they cannot be detained by the navy as it could breach the human rights of the pirate. Sounds like a Gilbert & Sullivan script.  Pure farce.
