BEWARE GARBED ZEALOTS
Cathy Young on a clash of religions:
It’s quite true that mistrust of science is all too common in American society, and the flames of this hostility are fanned by the religious right. But we should also beware of zealots in scientific garb who can only give ammunition to the enemies of science and reason.
Read whole thing.
These (so-called) scientists undoubtedly would bristle at this, but IMO they are biggest group of anti-Darwinists on the planet.

so I did that, and I still don’t get why I should beware of garbed zealots. Are they zealotier than the ungarbed ones, or what?

Not his fault I suppose. It’s not easy to type with cloven hooves while watching over one’s shoulder in case Farmer Brown is approaching while carrying a big net.

But in spite of the concerted, massive effort, Public doesn’t warm to gloom and doom:
Despite nearly two decades of panicky reports about a planet melting down, only 35 percent of Americans say global warming “will pose a serious threat to you or your way of life in your lifetime,” according to a recent Gallup Poll.
Silly Americans.

Maybe it cause them what’s goin all garbed up has more places to hide things that might go boom?
I mean, it is becoming rather popular for them what hold hard beliefs, one way or the other, to express themselves in an explosive manner.
After all, algrebra started in the araby area and look how that’s spread?
I have a friend who is a retired Professor of science who called that jerk in Texas when all of this broke. He said that the guy amiably tut-tutted over the hoopla, but that the story was essentially correct in stating his position. He was, says my friend, a perfectly nice guy, seemed perfectly normal, and was an absolute proof of the adage that evil is banal.
The virus that he talks about, by the way, is the ebola virus. It is absolutely deadly, though, of course, it takes several days for the virus to completely liquify the internal organs of the infected individual. The only problem is getting the damn virus to cooperate by changing its mode of delivery to an airborne one. Right now, it is passed through the blood. It would just take to long to infect enough people that way, you know? I learned all this stuff from the bastard himself.
I mean, if you can’t trust an eminent Korean stem cell researcher, who can you trust?
Speaking of zealots, does anyone remember the title of Tim’s thread about Paul Mirecki, the theology prof who claimed he was beaten up by intelligent design thugs?

I’ve at this point NOT found it in enough places that I’m starting to seriously wonder if it wasn’t an Iowahawk thread. Sorry.

A good read. One does wonder, when hearing of environmental scientists who look with favor on the deaths of billions of people through some natural cataclysm, how the scientists in question would feel if it turned out that they were the ones faced with a shortage of space in the lifeboats.
