BERKELEY SLAMMED

Just as happened in Telluride, conservative counter-protests are quietly underway in Berkeley:

The city’s recent dustup with the U.S. Marine Corps has so far cost the city more than $200,000, while businesses say they’ve been slammed by related protests ...

An Oregon Ducks football fan club and a Lafayette golf club are among the groups that have canceled junkets to Berkeley this fall ... A San Diego resort developer said he canceled three contracts with Berkeley suppliers and has persuaded other businesses to follow suit.

One advantage of being on the right: we’ve got the money. And we can withdraw it.

  1. “...we’ve got the money.”  Well that’s the stereotype.  But what of Billary’s tax returns?

Anyway, what money I’ve got won’t be spent in Berkeley.  I have frequent business in the area (Bay Area), and as a one-person microcosm, I’ll stick to Livermore (the labs) and Sears Point (Infineon Raceway) where Marcos Ambrose will race in the premiere NASCAR series this June.

  2. The Oregon Ducks! That brings back a memory. I was in a lift in LA and this lady turns to me and says ‘excuse me are you a duck’? Straight out of the blue. It turns out she was a ‘Ducks’ supporter and were in town for a game.

  3. I’m shocked that a Ducks fan group would do that. Their collegiate stereotype is that of the “University of California at Eugene”.  The campus is infested with dreadlocked white guys and women with braided leg hair.

  7. “Other such duties as assigned” has always been characteristic of Uncle Sam’s Misguided Children.  An unofficial additional verse of the Marine’s Hymn, written by an officer about 1912, gives voice to this reality:

    From the pesthole of Cavite
    To the Ditch at Panama,
You will find them very needful
Of Marines, that’s what we are.

I’m apparently mistaken that Tasmanian Ambrose will road race at Infineon.  I heard he’d do the “Sprint Cup” (formerly Nextel, formerly Winston) road races, but no.  Or maybe.  I don’t know.

At most, I’ll do a slow cruise up Telegraph from my old stomping grounds in Alameda and Oakland ‘til it ends at the San Rafael bridge.  No gas, no Slurpees, maybe a salute left behind at the Marine recruiting office and some CO2 from the rental car.

You may have the money, but you certainly don’t have the morality.

How is the right immoral, pray tell Gladio? The right support an economic environment which results in everyone being able to find a job instead of relying on taxes to support themselves, which in turn lowers tax rates, lowers crime rates, and boosts our economic prowess in the overseas market. It gives those people a sense of purpose, assists in setting a life routine, and allows that sense of dignity that we all get when we receive our pay for jobs well done.

The left supports an economic environment where those who don’t want to work don’t have to, and therefore rely on taxes which means that those who work for their money lose more of it to the Government. It also leads to a situation where people who don’t want to work eventually become difficult to employ because they don’t have any references from recent history, or they’ve become so entrenched in not working that they’re not fully prepared to return to the work market. Surely this type of economic environment isn’t healthy for Australia or for those on government benefits, or employers.

I know I’d rather support a system that supports people to work for themselves, rather than rely on others. It just seems more moral somehow. Wouldn’t you agree?

  39. Before that aside I was about to comment o/t that the discussion on the Tim Russert show involving himself and Sullivan/Hitchens is priceless.
Particularly to us Australians, where it is impossible to get a host who stays out of it to that extent, but intrudes with good and brief judgement, or to have a balance of guests rather than carefully picked fellow travellers. Sullivan is a fascinating study.
I have never clicked to six parts of such a show before!

Could the ABC keep its dramatic reflexes on Radio National and leave the news network to do, you know, news?
After hearing David Marr on Insiders (just joking, of course!) say that Mal Brough was going to intervene in the QLD Nationals and ban booze and bring them into the societal mainstream ... I have about had my fill of dramatic invention for the day.

Ernest, that’s true enough.  But I can assure you that while the faculty hearts Mao, Stalin, Mugabe, Kim, Castro, Pol Pot, and the other mass murders of Socialism, more than a few Oregon natives do not.  There are plenty of bona fide American patriots in Oregon.

It’s just that they are actually earning a living, instead of feeding off the public teat through the schools and local government.

  44. Ash_, that is an excellent response to “Gladio”.  But I doubt that you’re going to get an honest answer, as “Gladio” assumed his/her moniker from a rather hypocritical source.

Hypocritical in the sense that “Gladio” was part of an anti-communist operational contingency plan, as our “Gladio” seems to heart the left.

Just as Democrats can apparently go to the same church for twenty years without once hearing the sermon, they can also go four to eight years without making a single economic mistake.  For example, it’s obvious the dot-com bubble under Clinton HAD to be the fault of Bush the Elder.
