AUSTRALIANS AT WAR
New pictures are up. Coco the monkey is a highlight; so is Ali Baba’s Beauty Salon.
Australian Imperial Camel Corps?
I guess you can’t ride ‘roos? :)
Well, you can, but it’s really hard to qualify on the Enfield from the back of a kangaroo…

They were used for long range patrols and such. Camels were varely used in battle unless a patrol was ambushed. The Camel Corps and Light Horse regiments were mounted infantry which means that they rode to the battlefield and dismounted to fight on foot. It’s a bit like today’s concept of mechanised infantry.
The cav regiment which I served in, 2/14LH (Queensland Mounted Infantry), is a direct descendent of the 14th Light Horse Regiment which was mounted on camels during WW1.
That’s true, Murph, but at Magdhaba and Beersheba, they charged like cavalry with bayonets held in the hand.
Point of info: in WW1, out of an Army of 330,000, Australia suffered 60,000 dead and 150,000 wounded, a higher rate than any other army in that War. The population of Australia at the time was about 4 and a half million.

WOT, but is it true there’s a feral camel problem in Australia? Just heard that, the other day. You can’t say we Americans don’t try to keep up with the important news from down under!
