ATHENS ATTACKED

A bomb blast in central Athens:

The blast occurred at about 0600 (0400 GMT), in or just outside a post office in Syntagma Square, near the Greek finance ministry building.

It was not immediately known if there were any casualties from the blast. TV pictures showed damaged to nearby cars, cafes and shops.

A Greek daily newspaper received a bomb warning 30 minutes before the blast, state television said.

UPDATE. Thankfully, no fatalities:

Police say the bomb was apparently hidden in a container on the back of a motorcycle. It exploded shortly after an Athens newspaper received two phone calls warning of such an attack.

Police quote the caller as saying the nearby National Economy Ministry, which was not damaged, was the intended target. The caller did not identify any group behind the explosion.

The bombing coincided with the start of strikes by Greece’s largest unions against plans by the conservative government to change labor rules across the public sector.

Peaceful lefties would never damage property, would they? Meanwhile, in Beirut:

A prominent anti-Syrian MP in Lebanon has been killed in a car bomb attack in the capital Beirut, say reports.

At least two other people were killed and several injured in the powerful blast during rush hour.

  1. Clearly this was provoked by Greece’s involvement in the invasion of Iraq and its support of Israel.

  3. #2,

It’s not clear whether anyone was hurt or killed. Fingers crossed…

Regardless, I would like to be the first to say this is all John Howard and George W. Bush’s fault.

However I am sure that I am not.

It will be interesting to see whether this was intended for the Olympics period, yet postponed for some reason. I recall when there was a small bombing prior to The Games, some people commented that this sort of thing ‘happens in Greece quite a bit’.

  6. Woohoo!

Glad to be shown to have jumped the gun and spoken like an absolute dufus!

I guess it just shows that, with all this death and destruction going on, it’s easy to stop responding intelligently to the news.

  7. It’s all Bush’s fault. Get those American troops out of occupied Greece and Lebanon. Send in St. Sheehan to calm the freedom fighters. The Conservative government should apologize to the bombers. Prevent a backlash against the Muslim population by lifting laws against polygamy and wife bashing. The Zionists are planning another bombing next week. Support Palestinian Terror State. Hey, aren’t you listening? I’m offering you sensitive solutions to all your bombing problems.
