ARTICLE OF FAITH REPEATED
Labor foreign affairs spokesmite Kevin Rudd faults the Prime Minister for “his statement that Australia was the US deputy sheriff in Southeast Asia.”
What statement would that be, Kev?
yes, I must admit that I am a bit concerned about a treaty with the requirements of htat one: specifically no security pact with big power (ie USA) and no picking on your fellow signees (eg burma fascists).
That said, I guess me could always adopt those ‘asian values’ (like my scare quotes?), sign the thing, and then ignore it.
I would hope a qualified, reasonable, non partisan person does an in depth analysis of the pros and cons (a proper cba), if it is the only impediment to joining asean.
I’m trying to get media watch to do a deputy sherrif/plastic turkey combined special.

Greg Sheridan has a good opinion piece on it in The Australian.
Over the next few months, in some way or another, we should probably hold our nose and sign the damn thing.

Howard DID NOT say that he wasn’t the deputy sheriff, for TWO WHOLE DAYS you hear - TWO WHOLE DAYS. That OBVIOUSLY means that in essence he did say it. You RWDB’S just don’t want to see the truth that he DID SAY IT (by not saying that he didn’t say it)
So do we have it straight now? One more time for the slow? Say it after me - just because Howard didn’t say it, DOES NOT mean he didn’t say it.You have to wonder about a world where the ALP is so desparate to sign a security treaty with the military dictatorship of Burma!
Well, it’s the only way you’re going to get those Myanmar peacekeepers for Macquarie Fields…

Instapundit’s recent thread on the selective memory of US lefties makes a nice companion piece to this…
_When_ didn’t he say it? That’s the question. Context is everything.
When didn’t you say we couldn’t punish you? Don’t you understand my question?”
“No, sir. I don’t understand.”
“You’ve just told us that. Now suppose you answer my question.”
“But how can I answer it?”
“That’s another question you’re asking me.”
“I’m sorry, sir. But I don’t know how to answer it. I never said you couldn’t punish me.”
“Now you’re telling us when you did say it. I’m asking you to tell us when you didn’t say it.”
Clevinger took a deep breath. “I always didn’t say you couldn’t punish me, sir."
- Catch-2

Rudd’s Festus, or Chester.... “Ma’shal How’d! Ma’shal How’d!”

You have to wonder about a world where the ALP is so desparate to sign a security treaty with the military dictatorship of Burma! The world has truly gone mad.
