ADVICE FROM THE UNPOPULAR
The New York Times detects a problem for John McCain:
The problem, though, is that embracing Mr. Bush — whose average approval ratings hover around 32% — is likely to seriously damage Mr. McCain with the rest of the electorate.
They ought to know. The NYT’s approval ratings hover around 24 per cent. The paper’s embrace of Al Gore and John Kerry seriously damaged those candidates with the rest of the electorate.
Titanic, indeed. In fact, I think it’s an open question as to whether the NYT will even be around in its current form when we choose a new president.
In any event, McCain’s going to have to get used to this kind of thing. Before it’s all over, they’ll be somberly linking his mismatched socks to a presumed loss of mental capacity, and tut-tutting over an unnamed former staffer’s assertion that he once saw McCain eat a booger.
Also, The Fish Wrap Of Choice is feeling its unpopularity in opinion polls that really matter.

NYT = Many Americans
Check.
And Congress’ rating, now run by the Democrats, hovers in the low 20s.

Or maybe volunteer to lead a posse deputized by the Brattleboro Vigilance Committee in rounding up the Bush Gang? Continuing Rebecca’s Titanic analogy, the editors of the NYT are standing on the deck laughing at the discomfort of the people in the overcrowded life boats.
9 ...the editors of the NYT are standing on the deck laughing at the discomfort of the people in the overcrowded life boats.
The NYT editors stand laughing as they peel back the “Titanic” name on the ship to reveal the real name, “New York Traitors”. They scream, “Gotcha, suckers!”, as they prepare the chum for yet another round.

I can just imagine the NYT editorial staff reviewing their financial statement:
“I BLAME BUSH!!!!”

A classic example of why lefties shouldn’t be allowed to run anything more complex than a hot dog stand.

Precisely which big corporations “call the shots” on government policy?

On what do you base that? It would be no more specious to say that McCain won the primaries thanks to the paper’s endorsement.

I can see it now - waiting in line an hour-and-a-half for a shrivelled, flavorless frank on a hamburger roll, garnished with shredded cabbage and mayonnaise, with some clam juice to wash it down. Twelve bucks, and served by a surly minority civil servant.
#24—Jeff Skates: Sir, a little reading comprehension is in order. Perhaps you didn’t note the parallel logic on display with the repeated usage of: “seriously damage[d] {insert noun} with the rest of the electorate.”
New members might remember to get in touch with their funny bone while cruising this site as tongue-in-cheek humor and subtle irony is regularly on display. Leftists, often humorless, have difficulty recognizing such phenomena. Forewarned is to be forearmed.
Cheers.

Newsflash: Gore and Kerry lost those elections. Bush won.
And while no one can truly say whether Bush won in spite of or because of the NYT’s endorsements, the direct relationship is there.
Posted by The_Real_JeffS on 2008 03 06 at 07:46 PM • permalinkForbes, you’re right, there’s more than a little humor in that comparison. Pushing that button with lefties sometimes cranks ‘em, and sometimes gets them thinking.
But there’s an element of truth as well. Recall the old adage about movie critics: “If they hate it, it’s a good flick. If they like it, stay home.” Can’t say as I often failed following that advice.
Same here. But that’s something that no one can quantify as well.
