23 MILLION PRISONERS

AFP reports:

The US has the world’s largest penal population with some 10 percent of the adult population behind bars.

If true, this means the US prison population would be larger than the population of all but two states. The actual figure is closer to one per cent.

UPDATE. A lefty fell for it.

  1. And, oddly enough, the more people locked up the less crime there is with e.g. the New York Times not understanding how crime can be dropping as the prison population rises. It’s a mystery. (Like how decimal points work.)

  24. The fellow is wrong again, as in his update he implies that “Bush” had something to do with increasing prison populations - this is in fact almost entirely a state and local matter. The vast majority of prisoners in the US are held by states and localities, not by the Federal government. Rates of incarceration also vary widely among the states, driven mostly by local conditions and politics. The people demand that criminals be jailed, and in the US, unlike certain European states, there is still enough democracy that the popular will sometimes prevails.

And the rate of increase under “Bush” is no different than under “Clinton”, not that either of them had much to do with it.

And the AFP, in the report he links -

    http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200605/s1643973.htm

is grossly wrong in saying that 2/3 of prisoners in the US are held in federal prisons. Its less than 10%.

  32. Ten percent is obviously one of those figures the left just makes up because it sounds good. A lot of that seems to go on on that side of politics.

#4 Infidel, One percent is about the correct figure (as long as you are locking up the right one percent). A little while ago someone posted this link to Romeo Mike’s blog. It summarises studies on teenage male crime and it seems that about seven percent are chronic offenders and about ten percent of these were “super predators” and were responsible for most of the crime (and continue to be criminals later in life). This comes to about one percent of the total population.

The obvious conclusion is that if we identify and lock up the one percent who are super predators for several decades at a time then we could drastically reduce crime overall.

(And, no, I don’t particularly care about their civil rights.)

A little over half of this prison population is in jail for drug crimes, including possession of marijuana.  In the 1990s, marijuana use/possession was the single most pursued offense by American law enforcement agents.  Some states still have mandatory minimum sentences for first time possession of marijuana.  You can say what you want about pot heads, but I question whether this is an efficient use of law enforcement and court system resources.

Do you suppose the victim of an attack, if s/he attacked the attacker, would receive similarly lenient sentences?

  93. Incidentally, the title of this post should probably be “30 MILLION PRISONERS.” The US population is over 303 million as of this afternoon.

Also, if we did have that many people incarcerated, then 230 murders a year in the most vicious 10% of our population would make jails a good bit safer than being on the streets.  Certainly safer than the streets of Chicago, were 29 people were killed over the weekend.

  96. #65 - kae, I didn’t know that any of the users of this lightning detection system made this kind of thing public until now.  I installed this stuff for a public authority some years ago - fascinating bit of kit.

One thing we were told about the lightning detection system is that it is accurate to something like 5m in areas where they have a reasonably density of detectors (I may be an order of magnitude out here).  The bit that got me is that insurance companies supposedly use it when examining claims for storm damage - particularly blown TV’s and the like.  Or crop fires that farmers report.  If they see a bolt struck your house, they’ll pay for the TV on the spot.  If not, you might have all previous claims examined for fraud.

It’s great for watching storm cells rolling in across Sydney - what really got me is that almost every one of them goes straight over the top of Sydney airport.  If they had a system like this 80 years ago, they never would have put the airport where it is.

Oh, and I was 2 orders of magnitude out when I said 5m.  Better get meself a job at Lancet.

  99. #98 - mojo, that’s what the lightning detection systems actually use.  They have a network of radio recievers, and they simply triangulate the strikes.

Best lightning detector for the money: an AM radio.

Driving home yesterday afternoon the snaps and crackles were thick and fast. I heard a crackle and there in front of me I could see a lightning flash, about 50ks away, around about Toowoomba.

If we had a proper network of bullshit detectors and a system that plotted bullshit pronouncements on a web map, 2020 would have lit up like a bright red blob.  Think infrared photo of a volcano.

  103. I’m not reading or hearing the same sort of language applied to the Canberra government’s security measures today as we experienced around APEC. Ring of Steel, Virtual Lockdown, Methods Developed In Response to Refugees/Terrorists, Crushing of Dissent? Will the Chasers be there, and if so whose credibility will they be undermining? Unlikely that our media will throw anything so tacky at the loopy left ACT mates. Different if Howard was in charge.

  106. Tell me if I am being over-senstitive, but I have detected a certain degree of scepticism, or at least - a tendency to quibble - among some commentators here about the practical value of the 2020 summit.

Well, cop this quibblers! One of the major aims of the Summit is already close to fruition!

  113. #106 Margos - don’t laugh, a newsbreak on our local commercial TV station last night reported pretty much that ‘the bionic eye proposed at the 2020 summit was soon to be available’. Whether intentional or not the report made a very strong link between Kev’s wankfest and the fact that the Australian bionic eye project is close to fruition.
Obviously it was hardly a new idea if the boffins have been working on this for many years anyway such that they are shortly to start permanent implants in people but to link this to dear leader is taking Kevinism to a whole new level.

The only thing you could hope to come out of 2020 is the 500 or so people duped will bear a grudge. They came to Canberra at their own expense because they honestly believed Rudd was interested. They left just as many predicted - used and discarded, their ideas in the bin and their signatures on something they didn’t agree to or even discuss.

This anger will swell when they realise that key figures in this deception, people such as Cate Blanchett and the Rev Tim Costello, were paid to be there.

And what are the odds of Tim Costello standing as a celebrity Labor candidate in 2010? Pretty good I thought after his performance on Sunday. The only thing that would be an impediment is that Costello does live high on the hog off World Vision. It’s why it isn’t on my charity list.

From previous, cold war pre-TFR SAC sustained Mach 2 (30 min plus) Hustler in one of its (many unbroken) records: @700mph @ max. 500 feet.

IIRC the limitations of the Mach 2++ razor-thin wings, as in the Starfighter, were sacrificed in successors (as weapons platforms); replacement low-level ‘Aardvark’s’ extended nose for TFR capability as it was deemed too expensive to adapt the Hustler.

User now has a full doco series on all of its trophy wins; many of the record-breaking crew(s) went on to fly the Mach 3 SR-71 Blackbird.
