A HARD-EARNED THIRST NEEDS A BIG COLD BEER
Welcome back, Doug:
Early yesterday, Mr Wood was reunited with his American wife Yvonne Given, who had flown from their California home via Paris. The couple are expected to return to the US.
At an earlier celebration dinner with the Australian negotiating team in Dubai, Mr Wood chose steak and mashed potatoes while the others had pizzas.
He washed it down with a six-pack of his much-loved VB couriered to him by the Department of Foreign Affairs, but has told the team he is craving a Coonawarra red.
Meanwhile SBS’s homepage still features this line: “Sheikh Al Hilaly confirms Douglas Wood is free and in good health in an exclusive interview,” But the interview—referenced here, here, and here—has been deleted. Why?
Sheikh Al Hilaly says his life was at risk during his work in Iraq trying to secure the release.
“We saw death in the face many times,” he said. “Every so often a car would blow up and we would witness bodies flying in the air.”
